EMD SW1001's[edit]

  1. 1022-1026 are SW1001's from 1981. Both the March 1991 SRO roster in Trains Magazine (Which credits the Saudi Railways Organization among its sources) and the EMD order number site linked below list them as such, for two possible references if someone wishes to edit this article based on this information.

http://www.trainweb.org/emdloco/818000.htm

I assume that model railroad link misidentifying them as SW1200's perhaps was confused by the older style roof line. The SW1001 is essentially a SW1000, but with the classic EMD style cab associated with older EMD switchers from the 1940's through the mid 1960's, like SW1200's. Many industrial customers of EMD's products had restricted clearances designed around these older EMD switchers and couldn't handle the modern flatter roof of the SW1000 and other modern 645 engined EMD switchers like the SW1500 that launched alongside the SW1000.

Thus the SW1001 was born since so many of the customers for 1,000 hp switchers were industrial concerns rather than railroads, and the original SW1000 quickly phased out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:6000:A645:2100:71EC:1A0A:A34B:8841 (talk) 15:08, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
