History

[edit]

It was the first such organisation in history.

Do we know this for a fact, or just that it was the first in modern history? In ancient Greece, for instance, isn't it likely there were groups promoting the acceptance of homosexuality (which was not always the case)? --MQDuck (talk) 21:00, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The idea of such a group in ancient Greece is, I think, extremely anachronistic. Take a look at Homosexuality in ancient Greece. Ideas about sexuality in ancient Greece were very different from those of our time.
Before a group promoting the acceptance of homosexuality might exist, there should be a concept, a definition of homosexuality, a psychologic identification. However difficult to understand for modern man, the ancient Greek had no such concept, definition or identification. Soczyczi (talk) 19:27, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This book, and other that may have survived the destruction of the Wissenschaftlich-humanitäres Komitee and the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft, are sought after by the Magnus-Hirschfeld-Gesellschaft in Berlin.

What book is this referring to? The source refers to several different books. Also, shouldn't this be in the "Publications" section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.201.255.206 (talk) 09:13, 22 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hitler's was not afraid to change history to suite his own history of Germany like things he did on Fredrick the great and others

Lack of sources

[edit]

"The Committee also assisted defendants in criminal trials, conducted public lectures, and gathered signatures on a petition for the repeal of the law. Signatories included Albert Einstein, Hermann Hesse, Thomas Mann, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Leo Tolstoy. "

I think this paragraph is very interesting, however it lacks references. I've looked on the German version of this article and I didn't found the paragraph neither, of course, the reference.

I was able to find other articles on the internet stating a similar information, but without reputable references as well. If someone knows better where to look its reference up, I think it would be worthwhile adding it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Januoaxe (talkcontribs) 16:04, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

New Source

[edit]

I noticed a couple minor issues with this article. All proposed changes below are proposed based on information from Magnus Hirschfeld: The Origins of the Gay Liberation Movement, a university publication that contains a lot of information on the topic.

Although it never had more than 500 members...

According to the source I was looking at, the committee capped out at nearly 700 members in its heyday. Additionally, the "Publications" section makes no mention of the committee's informative brochure, What Must Our Nation Know of the Third Sex?.[1]

I intend to just make a few minor changes to add clarity and information on those two points. If anyone has any comments about this, please let me know either here or on my talk page! I'm very open to suggestions.

Many facts appear to be missing

[edit]

This page is interesting (as is a page it links to about Hirschfeld).

Interesting because of what the pages haven't mentioned. Their page on the clinic omits the fact that one surgeon was Erwin Gohrbandt, a psychopath who went on to experiment on captives of the Nazi concentration camps.

Magnus Hirschfeld championed eugenics.

In 1931 he visited Paul Popenoe and Ezra Gosney in America, fellow champions of sterilisation for the “feeble-minded”. He was apparently greeted “like an old friend… we have studied for 25 years”. Both men were racists and white supremacists.

Hirschfield praised them as being in “the vanguard of improving humanity by sterilising unfit men and women”. Their research was to provide the model for the introduction of the Nazis’ compulsory sterilisation program just two years later in 1933. He encouraged voluntary sterilisation and castration, particularly for gay men. He was also open to forced sterilisations for the ‘feeble-minded’ and oversexed, as well as the disabled.

Why are these matters missing from the page on Hirschfeld and this page on his institution? Surely they're essential in creating a full picture of things? Charliepenandink (talk) 01:45, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
