Crazy sign of the times

[edit]

I Just watched the Bengals Camp on ESPN and to make the practice squad is not too bad of a salary, this reference has educated me that you can get pick up as a free agent. What was more suprising to me was that only up to 8 players are on the Squad. medical How does a 21-24 year old kid on a practice squad need to take an extra job if he gets paid 80,000 a season. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 128.205.127.129 (talk) 23:03, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually that is outdated, that was a long time ago, some time before the first Super bowl, I believe. Taxi squad actually came from a coach who made his players drive taxis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.170.232.217 (talk) 16:19, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading

[edit]

The last part of the following sentence appears to be highly misleading:

They have free agent status and can sign with any team they wish without compensation to the original team, if they are released from the practice squad.

Practice squad players ARE free agents. They can sign as free agents, as it says... so what is referred to in the "if they are released" section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fyo (talkcontribs) 17:11, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal

[edit]

Merge I think this is a no-brainer. However, I did put up the merger proposal to prevent editing wars. Jgera5 (talk) 06:05, 28 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and did a redirect. Jgera5 (talk) 06:34, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Scout teamPractice squad – By far the most common name. Indeed, not one reference in the article uses the current title, making it seem like a neologism without any support whatsoever. Current title is a result of an u discussed merger back in 2006 in which a pre-existing practice squad article was merged into here by the creator of this article, despite the older article's prior existence and therefore priority. In short, not only should this merge been done in the other direction once the creator of this article realized they created a duplicate article to one that already existed, but the two articles should probably get a histmerge. oknazevad (talk) 12:35, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment. The real problem here is that a practice squad and scout team are not the same thing. Using the NFL as an example, a team's backup quarterback will often run the scout team but is not a member of the practice squad. So, while players on the practice squad will play on the scout team, the two terms are not synonymous. Calidum 12:59, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
    • Then, being that's the case, the article should probably be split, and the merge from 2006 undone. oknazevad (talk) 15:27, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
      • You know, on second thought this article is really about the concept of a practice squad and not a scout team. So the page should be moved to reflect that. I also don't think we need an article on the concept of a scout team. I would suggest that sort of information could go into an article on practice in sports, but apparently there isn't one on Wikipedia. Calidum 16:35, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
        • Maybe on a glossary of sport somewhere? But yes, this I agree that this article is really about practice squads in scope, not scout teams. Again, it goes back to the incorrect merger of 2006 and the redirecting of the wrong article (which was around first). oknazevad (talk) 20:30, 22 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom. Split the edit history at the merge point, and move both "scout team" and "practice squad" history prior to the merge to "scout team (football)" and "practice squad (football)". The edit history from the mergepoint onwards should exist at "practice squad". I will note that scout team is not just a sports term. For instance, military scouts may operate in teams -- 70.51.202.113 (talk) 04:44, 23 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
