St Francis Xavier was not Portuguese. He was born in Navarre, Spain.

Origin of the name of the island[edit]

@Meodel: I've removed the line "Its name originated from São João ("Saint John" in Portuguese)." that you added in this edit in 2020, since the source you cited, World Trade Systems of the East and West: Nagasaki and the Asian Bullion Trade Networks, does not, in fact, make this claim. The names 上川山 and 下川山 are attested in Volume 79 of Da Ming Yitong Zhi, published by the Ming imperial court in 1461, before Francis Xavier was even born. That the Chinese pronunciation of 上川 resembles Portuguese São João is probably just a coincidence. RcAlex36 (talk) 12:08, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
