Meaning?

[edit]

I don't think the explanation "carrying baskets" comes from the cited sources (not sure, though). According to [1], biān may be a "an ancient type of weapon, segmented and made of iron" - perhaps something like a nunchaku (perhaps originally a flail). Is there anything we can actually source?-- (talk) 11:23, 16 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The 'whip' is one of the 18 traditional weapons of Chinese martial arts. This weapon was in fact an iron rod, similar in size to a straight sword but without point or sharp edges. Tipical for this weapon is that it has several knots along its length. Also it came as a pair and usually one was slightly heavier than the other to make up for the difference in strength between the left and right arm. Traditionally the door god is pictured with these weapons. In the taijiquan 'Single whip' position the stretched arm with the hook hand is similar to handling just one of these whips, hence single whip. MarcHeyvaert (talk) 09:41, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
