Talk:South Asian American
Untitled
[edit]Why is this article even here? There is no East Asian Americans or Southeast Asian Americans article. I think some Pak just wanted to associate their group with Indians. --Dangerous-Boy
There are a fair number of cultural commonalities (between North Indians and Pakistanis with regards to language (the mutually intelligible Hindi and Urdu, and Punjabi, culture, and cuisine), or between Indian Bengalis and Bangladeshis, or between Indian and Sri Lankan Tamil speakers.
And then there's the Desi identity.
A South Asian identity in America, whether you like it or not, certainly exists.

- Still, you could have just added this info to the Asian American article. --Dangerous-Boy
While all asian cultures have some similarity, the arbitrarily designated south asian ones on the indian subcontinent have considerably more solidarity due to geographic boundaries. I think, more importantly, we should merge the Indian american article into this, and start talking about the subtleties of different parts of the subcontinent -- ie. nepalese, paki, sri lankan, bengali vs bangladeshi, etc etc. Chantoke 09:55, 10 May 2007 (UTC)
Population Figures
[edit]Some of the population fingures are incorrect. They do not match-up with the US. census (as the link provides). I am correcting the numbers to reflect each group's population alone or in combination (the same fromat India is in). -Emmadi 00:11, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
There is another issue I would like to raise in regard to the population figures. Here the figure for South Asian Americans is ~1.9 million, however the article on Indian Americans states there are some ~2.4 million. This does not make sense to me. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't the term "South Asian American" include ALL Indian Americans? If so, then the population figure here would HAVE to be MORE than ~2.4 million. Thanks for the help! JeffreyN 20:00, 29 January 2007 (UTC)
Heavily tilted towards Indians?
[edit]South Asians doesnt only include Indians but Pakistanis, Sri Lankans and Bangladeshis and yet this article is totally Indian. Please add some different perpectives. Mercenary2k 23:18, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
