Saturday December 30th - The Marquis of Queensbury, South Wigston - MC, 70 people "What a way to end 2006. Punch-ups, hecklers exposing their ample breasts and the scariest pub I have EVER walked into. Ever. Oddly fun - in the same way I imagine the chaps on Jackass have fun..."" www.jimsmallman.com

South Wigston is one of the poorest ward’s in the Oadby and Wigston Borough Council area. With higher than national deprivation indices, High unemployment, lower educational take-up and attainment, high incidence of single parent households some of the poorest health statistics in the area.

South Wigston is divided from Wigston by a railway line, and is almost a self contained. There are few community facilities in the area. Other than church facilities the Bassett Street centre is the only other community facility.

These factors whilst lamentable offer a real opportunity for bringing both capital and revenue resources into the area.

For some and all of the above reasons South Wigston has been declared a conservation area and a priority area for urban renewal. The Marquis represents the single largest example of Victorian architecture in the area and should be central to the renewal plans for Blaby Road.

Shops and small businesses adjacent to The Marquis are targeted for grant aid improvements {matched funding up to 2-3 K depending on whilst the road , street furniture and pavements have been repaved by "TESCO".

The South Leicestershire college is planning to move to within 100 yards of the Marquis in a major development, if it all goes to plan by the end of 2009 a Fantastic Further Education College, but this time Adult Education and F/E H/E. 39 million Pounds "Estimate" Great opportunities for urban renewal, whilst two years ago "Tesco" opened a major supermarket at one end of Blaby Road within 200 yards of the Marquis --Marquisofqueensbury (talk) 00:25, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Milk float

[edit]

I think the entry may have enough "History pictures" already, but here's a Morrison's milk float which I think was born in South Wigston. I guess if ever anyone sets up an image gallery, you might wish to add this to it... Not my call Regards Charles01 (talk) 18:22, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
