Amygdaloideae name change
[edit]The International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants includes a new paragraph that affects the name of this subfamily, when it is expanded to avoid paraphyly. In brief, the correct name is Amygdaloideae.
As a result of the 2011 International Botanical CongressI, Article 19 of the code will have a new paragraph:
The name of any subdivision of a family that includes the type of a name listed in App. IIB (i.e., a name of a family conserved against all unlisted names, see Art. 14.5) is to be based on the generic name equivalent to that type (Art. 10.6), unless this is contrary to Art. 19.4 (see also 19.7). If more than one such type is included, the correct name is determined by precedence in App. IIB, of the corresponding family names.
An example will be added to the code:
A subfamily in Rosaceae including Malus Mill. (1754), the type of Malaceae Small (1903) a name listed in App. IIB, is to be called Maloideae C. Weber (1964), unless it also includes Rosa L. (1753), the type of the name of the family, or the type of another name listed in App. IIB that takes precedence over Malaceae. This is so, even if this subfamily also includes Spiraea L. (1753) and/or Pyrus L. (1753), because, although Spiraeoideae Arn. (1832) and Pyroideae Burnett (1835) were published earlier than Maloideae neither Spiraeaceae nor Pyraceae are listed in App. IIB. However, if Amygdalus L. (1753) is included in the same subfamily as Malus, the name Amygdaloideae Arn. (1832) has priority as Amygdalaceae Marquis (1820) is a conserved family name with priority over Malaceae.

- OK, fine, but what about Pyreae? Pyreae is a bluelink and Maleae is a redlink. Or to ask the question I'm really asking: how do I link to an article concerning the group of plants whose fruits are pomes? Do we need a redirect from Maloideae (sensu Cronquist)? Perhaps there is a better solution... Kingdon (talk) 01:12, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- Pyreae should link to a new page called Maleae, I think. Maloideae could remain with a discussion of what it used to mean (I've just changed it). There's an enormous amount of work to be done, mostly changing genus pages to the new subfamily name.
- I think that you could link to Maloideae for the pome-plants if you prefer, but I'll try to get a stub for Maleae in place soon. Nadiatalent (talk) 11:43, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- So the group of plants whose fruit are pomes is currently Malinae, an unpublished name for what has been (incorrectly) called Pyrinae. A draft of the page is in place. Nadiatalent (talk) 18:42, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
