This article contains many factual errors and misunderstandings. Engels' Condition of the Working Class in England', for example, makes no reference to St.Michael's church or its burial ground, nor is Angel Street / Meadow mentioned. The burial ground traversed by the railway extension was at Walker's Croft, alongside the Irk, which is clearly stated in Engels' book, and was the subject of much controversy between 1839 and 1842, when this section was built. The line opened fully on 1 Jan 1844, after which Oldham Rd station became a goods depot, lasting until 1968. Although early considerations for the extension line would have taken a small piece of the St.Michael's lower burial ground, in the event this did not happen, two new bridges over the Irk being contructed instead, to take the line clear of the ground. The 'wiggle' in the tracks on the northeast side of Victoria can still be seen today. "Angel Meadow" never existed; it was a typical Lancashire ironic nickname for the area around Angel St, which by the early 1800s was about as unlike a meadow as was possible to imagine. The lower burial ground, officially closed in 1816 (after Walker's Croft had opened the previous year) was partially re-used in 1832, following the cholera epidemic. However, this involved much shallower excavations than normal, some coffins being only 14" below the soil surface; some were even laid on the ground and simply covered over with earth. By the 1860s the whole cemetery had become so unsalubrious and unsightly that it was decided to flag it over; this was proposed in 1867. Further slight improvements, such as benches, were added in 1888. By the 1920s, myths had begun to spring up, many locals believing it was a former plague ground. The flags were removed and the area grassed over in the 1990s, the present signs suggesting that this was the original 'meadow', and the area around the mound at the top was St.Michael's flags - in fact, this was the site of the church itself, which was surrounded by its own smaller churchyard, for family burials. It might be fitting to bear in mind that the bodies were never removed from either ground. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.32.136 (talk) 14:22, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
Burial Act 1855
[edit]it doesn't seem to mention flagstones. [1] Marnanel (talk) 02:01, 6 May 2024 (UTC)
