Citing of alumni
[edit]An alumni list necessarily is subject to BLP concerns, and must be sourced correctly to avoid such issues. It is usual with alumni lists to give an arbitrary few days of grace after placing the {{alumni}} tag in the section, but edotors are quite correct if they remove unreferenced alumni on sight form the list. - Using this simple search many citations may be found and, come to that, many more alumni than are in this list.
- But please, please, may we have them in alphabetical order of surname rather than the chaos that is there today? Fiddle Faddle (talk) 16:25, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- It is now very challenging indeed to use internet search engines to secure any citations for alumni here. The addition of this great swathe of unreferenced people has ensured that every goshdarned mirror and scraper site has each name associated with this school. The unwise addition made in good faith but very much against policy by previous editors has prejudiced our simple ability to search for and to fins online material. I have tried a few at random, and found this task to have ben rendered not impossible by very hard indeed. I now declare myself rather fed up that all the work of previous editors may go to waste as well as my own when uncited alumni are deleted by editors who do follow policy in the future. I wish people would think their actions through. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 21:48, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Never fear. I am seeing some via online obits from The Times, I've got access to Who Was Who and - if it comes to the crunch - I can always start digging through the Wayback Machine. One thing that does concern me is that you have been adding categories to various bios even though we have no verification. Perhaps it doesn't matter for something like this but in my more usual sphere of ops, it can cause all sorts problems. At some point, when the list is as verified as can be, the category will have to be trawled & discrepancies in either direction (verified in list or verified in article) can be harmonised. - Sitush (talk) 21:55, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Mea culpa. I was hoping that it would act as a spur to those who maintain those articles to research it a smidgen too. There are more ways of skinning a cat :) So I take the blame but am unabashed Fiddle Faddle (talk) 22:00, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- By the way, grandmothers and eggs, but I tend to add citations to the individual's article as well as the list. IT closes the loop. But right now a break is in order. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 22:02, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm going for a pint <g> I'll drop you a note about online sources - I see no reason why you cannot obtain access to ODNB, WW, WWW, Times and Guardian etc as I have, and it doesn't involve signing up for anything on Wikipedia. - Sitush (talk) 22:25, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- I'm very happy to take on the work of adding the who was who (etc) citations to the indivdual articles on people, but I can't see them. My local library card seems not to let me in. I'll speak to the librarian on Monday. Can you assure me that they show Stubbington House School in them before I start? Fiddle Faddle (talk) 16:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

[edit]Forster died in 1866 and was succeeded by his son. The place appears to have become something of a shambles - a court hearing is reported in The Manchester Guardian, 29 November 1883, page 3, that basically amounts to a successful claim brought by one of the masters for constructive dismissal. According to this, there was no discipline worthy of the name: the kids pretty much did whatever they wanted. - Sitush (talk) 17:14, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
- A couple of very informative pages in The Rise of the English Prep School. - Sitush (talk) 17:23, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
Alumni - alpha sort
[edit]I have made a set of assumptions. These may require correction by someone with special knowledge.
- Where the surname is hyphenated I have used the first part of the name as the alpha key.
- When we have a member of the peerage, Lord Foo, I have filed under Foo.
- Where there is a name like 'Peter Arthur Fiffington Foodle', I have filed under Foodle, not under Fiffington; I am aware that some surnames are not hyphenated, but I do not possess this knowledge.
Please add new alumni in the correct position in the list. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 20:06, 30 November 2012 (UTC)
George Eyston
[edit]I am a bit concerned about George Eyston being in the list of alumni. Sure, he is dead but neither Who Was Who nor his obituary in The Times mention Stubbington. Nor do his admission records held by Trinity College, Cambridge (I've asked them today, using one of my contacts, after first ascertaining that he has no entry in Venn). He certainly went to Stonyhurst although that, of course, does not preclude him having attended SHS beforehand. - Sitush (talk) 17:37, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- I have removed the relevant cat from his page. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 00:25, 2 December 2012 (UTC)
Moved from alumni list
[edit]The entries below are removed from the list of alumni due to lack of verification. Aside from web searches, attempts have been made to verify using obituaries, Who Was Who and the ODNB (all behind paywalls) & also by referencing the sources in the linked articles. - Sitush (talk) 22:41, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hubert Acland DSO, baronet and naval officer
- Bernard Acworth DSO, pioneer of sonar, journalist and creationist
- Edwyn Alexander-Sinclair GCB MVO, Commander-in-Chief, China Station and Commander-in-Chief, The Nore
Earleywood
[edit]There is a frustrating snippet here. - Sitush (talk) 11:51, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- Entirely! I have found some citations, regrettably not as authoritative as one might wish, for Earleywood School. It is, however, the east important part of the article, so the citations are probably proportionate. Earleywood (and later Stubbington House) were overshadowed by the huge number of other prep schools in the area. There was insufficient space in the market for them all and Stubbington foundered in the 90s with the poor financial climate. All the others struggled, too. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 11:59, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, Stubbington seems to have been torpedoed without trace. Bit of a shame, really, at least when I'm wearing my historian's tricorne. - Sitush (talk) 12:14, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
