A start, but more work needed

[edit]

I've created this page but realise it needs a bit of work. I intend to create a diagram of a typican canberra suburb, and a diagram of the urban hierarchy. This article could also be merged with the List of suburbs of Canberra article, but I'll tackle that one when I have more time. Feel free to re-arrange these if you like. This page could also in some way interact with the Suburbs section in the Canberra article, or the information from there could be used here and vice versa. Adz 01:41, 24 August 2005 (UTC).[reply]

Terminology issue

[edit]

From reading old documents, it is clear that the words "town centre" had a meaning which is different to the plain english meaning. The Belconnen or Woden "town centre" originally appears to have meant the whole of those districts (including their suburbs) rather than just the central administrative/commercial parts. Yet in this description of the "suburbs of canberra", it seems to be used in its plain english sense.

This is apparent, in the descriptions of the ACT legislature electorates, for example, the Brindabella electorate was described as containing the "town centre" of Tuggeranong. In fact is contains "all" of Tuggeranong, so I changed it to read "the town centre and suburbs of Tuggeranong".

Is there a current "official" meaning of the phrase "town centre" in Canberra ? Does the Tuggeranong or Belconnen "town centre" still actually mean the whole of those districts ? Or does it now just mean the central part according to the normal plain english meaning ? If so, it should be used consistently.Eregli bob (talk) 06:18, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No I don't think that the "town centre" meaning has changed, it still applies just to the shopping or central precinct. Early on I heard these called satellite cities, but not for the last 30 years. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:28, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you read the old documents, it is clear that "town centre" actually refered to the whole of each of Canberra's satellite districts. Which is a rather odd meaning, but 50 years ago thats what they used.Eregli bob (talk) 10:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And the person who previously wrote that the Gininderra electorate comprises the town centre of Belconnen, plus one suburb of Gungahlin, was obviously using that old meaning, otherwise it doesn't make sense.Eregli bob (talk) 10:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Villages

[edit]

Why are Villages part of this page when its meant to be just about the Canberra divisions? Aren't the villages outside and separate to Canberra within their own ACT districts ? Sdinesh2222 (talk) 00:46, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
