I'm pretty sure non-EU players (from Switzerland, Norway etc) can and have represented Europe in the Ryder Cup - the European Ryder Cup Team can therefore not be a European Union Ryder Cup Team. Any thoughts?

That is correct. The page has been amended since. --Simonski (talk) 19:47, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Team Europe, not Team EU

[edit]

Linked to an extent to the discussion on the EU page on sport, you must be careful Gpeilon not to turn this page into something that reads like pro-EU propaganda. Be careful to note the difference between European involvement in sport and EU involvement in sport. People will be less likely to oppose your edits here than in the EU page, as they are perhaps more relevant here, but you will have to reword your edits/contributions to make them more objective and less representative of a particular view. Prodi saying that the EU nations should carry flags at the olympics is of little relevance to an article on Pan-European teams (and even if it was, just because they would carry the EU flag that would not mean a Team Europe existed), and just because one person made a table of EU medals means absolutely nothing, as it is completely unofficial and irrelevant. Unlike the EU page where I completely oppose your changes, I am more open to changes here but like I said, the content must be objective. --Simonski (talk) 13:33, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Simon. First, why do you always start deleting things before talking? This is not good Wikipedia practice, as you know. Second, at no point in time the NOP has been breached on this page which only presents factual points and positions from leading figures in the EU. That other people may have other opinions, excellent, they should be here too. Wikipedia is about adding information not masking it. The declaration of am EU official about considering the EU as an entity in the Olympics is clearly relevant in the article "Team Europe". You may disagree with this person, fine. But it is a fact that this person took this position and that this was widely discussed in the media (http://news.google.com/archivesearch?um=1&cf=all&ned=uk&hl=en&q=flag+eu+olympics+prodi&cf=all). Hence it is worth mentioning in this very specific article. If you think it is necessary to add that this view is not shared by other people, fine, but removing it is holding back relevant information.
In addition, there is no reason to remove the bit on the football team Europe XI and the declaration of the President of the European Council on the idea of an EU team. You do not talk about this point in your argument. How can a point on a EU football team not be relevant in the page on Team Europe? I hope to have made my point and the motivation of this article clearer. I suggest to reinstate the text and you can add references about other opinion if you find them relevant. I'll respond more fully at a later stage, but for now to say I understand where you are coming from and indeed would accept that some of the text you put in could be relevant (ie the Europe XI football team for charity events) - if you tried tweaking your additions though to make it read more objectively then they'd definitely be more acceptable. I would still oppose strongly the Olympic table though - there is room for more relevant content to be added here than unofficial tables like that - perhaps more on some of the actual Team Europe's (ie Ryder cup) would be more helpful? --Simonski (talk) 18:22, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks for your comments, I will work on something. Though, I'd stress that at no point there has been a lack of objectivity. Best Gpeilon (talk) 18:48, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flag

[edit]

Isn't the flag misleading? It's connected to the European Union, although also used by the Council of Europe. Neither of these are relevant entities here, though – the teams are not organised by them. /Julle (talk) 20:36, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Addressed this. /Julle (talk) 20:39, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Reverted edit. Across almost all major competitions a "Team Europe" take part in they have adopted this flag (Ryder Cup, Solheim Cup, Mosconi Cup, Weber Cup, etc). I have also reverted the clarification in the lead that you removed, that the teams are not orgainsed by the EU and Council of Europe. MarsToutatis talk 22:47, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree on maintaining the flag, there's precedent for it being used in most competitions (although not all e.g. world cup of hockey). I also agree with keeping the intro, although it should be made clearer that neither the EU nor council of europe is organising the teams. Auguel (talk) 00:09, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
