Neil Gaiman's reaction
[edit]@neilhimself Was just sent a link to the Wikipedia page for #OceanLane. It's written in very strange (non-native?) English. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ocean_at_the_End_of_the_Lane …
Oh. Oh dear. RT @ChelleNZ: I think you'll find that's Wikipedia English.

Source of citations
[edit]Neil has been posting links to many reviews on his twitter feed https://twitter.com/neilhimself/
There could well be others on his blog & elsewhere, but I haven't checked. Lentower (talk) 20:12, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
Ocean started as a short story
[edit]In other reviews, he mentioned that this novel started as a short story.
In the interest of accuracy, these could be found and the article corrected. Lentower (talk) 20:12, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
Awards
[edit]Locus just announced that 'Ocean at the end of the Lane' won the best fantasy novel award for 2013. Should this be added to the "Reception" category or should a separate section for "Awards/Accolades" be started? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KarmaKomik (talk • contribs) 12:36, 4 July 2014 (UTC)
Johannes Scheepers
[edit]I'm not sure if this should be mentioned in the article or not, but currently there is the sentence: "Some events in the book were drawn from Gaiman's childhood, such as the theft of a car belonging to the protagonist's father, mirroring a similar event where his father's car was stolen and the thief committed suicide in the vehicle"
The suicide victim seems to be Johannes Scheepers, a lodger that was staying with Gaiman's family as a student of scientology (Gaiman's family were scientology elite). Gaiman mentions that the man was their lodger in this interview (at about the 5:30 mark). It also seems that Scheepers was not a gambler at all, and indeed that Gaiman's father had lied under oath that Scheepers was a scientologist. (There is more information at this source).
It doesn't really sit right with me that this article on the book that includes an account of this man's suicide is still disparaging him as a car thief that had no other connection to the Gaiman family or to scientology. I know that the article is about the book and not about this incident, but as it stands the information that is included is just false. Rorb lalorb (talk) 15:54, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
