Disambiguation needed - suggested method?

[edit]

i would like to add an article about the West Indian group The Sandpebbles. This group had several huge hits across the Caribbean and Europe in the 70's, and even toured successfully in the US. It is, in my opinion, at least as likely - if not far more so in the case of people from the Caribbean and Europe at least - that someone searching for The Sandpebbles would be searching for information on that group rather than the American one.

i propose making The Sandpebbles a disambiguation page, pointing to The Sandpebbles (US group) and The Sandpebbles (Barbados group) (and, possibly, also the film, The Sand Pebbles). Or, perhaps without the "group"s? Suggestions, recommendations? Also i am new to Wikipedia, so if there are established rules for this kind of situation that i have missed, please let me know. - DarkerStar (talk) 06:00, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that's fine, feel free to go ahead. But just make sure that before you start the Barbados page that you have good sources for their having had hits - a lot of band pages get deleted very quickly without having proof of fame. Chubbles (talk) 15:36, 25 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the advice. It may be difficult to find Caribbean sources that can attest to their influence, due to the depressing paucity of information on Caribbean music available (even in the Caribbean). But it should not prove difficult to find records of their chart success in Europe, once i figure out where to look for European chart information from the 60's and 70's. i also found two album pages, one from Fatboy Slim and the other from Van Dyke Parks, and one song page here on Wikipedia that are attempting to link to them. Would evidence of their songs being used by other artists (and not only other Caribbean artists like Arturo Tappin) serve as evidence of notability? Incidentally, i have also stumbled across a contemporary Australian group named either "The Sandpebbles" or "The Sand Pebbles" (i have not done further research to determine which), that seems to be quite popular. If it is "The Sandpebbles", that will be yet another note on the disambiguation list... and if it is "The Sand Pebbles", i would think it might be prudent to mention that possible spelling on the disambiguation page, too. There doesn't seem to be much of anything about this group on the Internet. That's trouble unless you've got solid paper sources. Can you find a good writeup of them in, say, a discography or published book (something with an ISBN, whose existence is easy to prove), or a major music magazine? Doesn't need to be in English. What countries did they chart in? There are searchable databases online, and I can't find evidence of them hitting the top 40 in the UK, Austria, or Finland (the 3 I checked). What were the names of the hits? Any source, online or paper, that conclusively verifies charting, along with a source to go on for biographical information, should be enough to land them a lasting article that meets WP:MUSIC.
