Album list format

I've been seeing more and more of these discographies in tables recently - do we really need them in that format? It makes them rather troublesome to edit for those not familiar with HTML. Why not just do them as a bullet-pointed list, thus:

  • Album Title (Label name; Year)
  • Another Album Title (Another Label; Another Year)

That seems cleaner, easier on the eye, and easier to edit to me. --Camembert

There is no need for the table. I say get rid of it because it is difficult to edit and isn't needed. --mav

It looks like the origin of the table is from Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums. It's only difficult to create the table, editing is not too hard, in my opinion. I agree that the bullet-pointed list is more appealing to the eye, and much quicker to edit. It seems like some of those groups with albums in the WikiProject Albums are in the table format, while those groups not in that project are in a list format of this kind:

Example Discography

Another Example

  1. Please Please Me (March 22 1963) #1
  2. With the Beatles (November 22 1963) #1

I wish they were in a standard format as you suggest, but there is a lot of inertia to overcome.Gbeeker 19:56, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Dockers Commercial

Should we mention the Dis-Infected version of "This Is the Day" (aka "That Was the Day") was featured very prominently in a Dockers commercial recently?

I would say that would belong in the page for the song... which doesn't exist at the time of writing, as far as I know. Folkor 19:02, 5 February 2006 (UTC)

A question

As there is a fixed policy on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject The Beatles/Policy saying that the Beatles has to be written with a lowercase 't', I wonder what your thoughts are about using that policy for this page, and if you would agree or disagree. I thank you. andreasegde 16:35, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

I would agree, unless someone can find a specific verifiable source that suggests otherwise. Yeanold Viskersenn 21:44, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

Members

I don't know if I would call Sinéad O'Connor or Neneh Cherry (or certain others) "past members". Surely they were contributors / guest artists / backing singers etc. Johnny Marr may have been a "member", but Jools Holland wasn't. Your thoughts? Stephenjh

  • My thoughts are these: Neither Sinead nor Neneh were "backing singers". They both shared lead vocals with Johnson. Have you listened to the albums or know anything about the band and it's music? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.195.83.3 (talk) 12:11, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
    • Yes thanks, I know the music quite well, and even if Sinead or Neneh shared lead vocals, it doesn't make them "members" of the band. Do you realy belive that if they were asked, they would say that they were "members of The The"?
    • The Neneh Cherry page simply states that "She also worked with The The...". The Sinéad O'Connor page states "O'Connor joined The The frontman Matt Johnson as a guest vocalist on the band's album Mind Bomb, which spawned the duet "Kingdom of Rain.".
    • Have you read the articles or know anything about the band and it's music? Stephenjh 10:11, 9 December 2009 (UTC)

Success // Content

Is there opportunity to include observations on the success of the The in this page? While I appreciate that there is a lot of restriction on individual research etc. I do see a lot of pages within the Alternative pages speak to critical acclaim or record sales. While the The is not of the pre-eminent level of some other acts there must be sales figures, chart positions and or reviews that can be drawn on.

Further to that, there are certain recurring themes throughout the music which should be suitable for documentation. I don't believe that documenting the character of the music would be any less encyclopedic than documenting the character of Sonic Youth's music or The Pixies' music, both of which are captured on their respective pages.

I haven't yet done any legwork yet, but I'd be happy to if the opportunity exists.

the/The

You are invited to participate in an RfC at Wikipedia talk:Requests for mediation/The Beatles on the issue of capitalising the definite article when mentioning that band's name in running prose. This long-standing dispute is the subject of an open mediation case and we are requesting your help with determining the current community consensus. Thank you.--andreasegde (talk) 05:09, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Pronunciation

How do you pronounce the band's name? "Thee Thah"? "Thah Thee"? "Thah Thah"? Or "Thee Thee"?124.158.33.96 (talk) 22:18, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

As one only pronounces the word the as "Thee" if the following word starts with a vowel sound, they could either be "Thah Thah" or "Thah Thee", but not "Thee Thah" or "Thee Thee". In any event, I have never heard them called anything but "Thah Thah". 172.130.186.49 (talk) 06:45, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I pronounce it "thuh thuh." But that's just me. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 03:00, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
What about syllable stress? I had always pronounced it "thuh thuh", but I seem to recall a 1980s interview where Johnson pronounced it "thuh thuh". Is this the proper stressed syllable, or was he just being cheeky? Hoof Hearted (talk) 14:34, 4 August 2014 (UTC)

"the The" or "The, the"?

In the category Category:British musical groups, should this be alphabetised under "the The" or "The, the"? JIP | Talk 09:40, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • I'd say The The. Secretlondon
  • I.e., Secretlondon recommended alphabetisation under "the The", which is incorrect, just as it would be incorrrect to list the Who under T instead of under W. In the case of the The, the situation is very clear; even on the band's albums, the article preceding the actual name is lower case. In the case of the Who and the Rolling Stones and the Netherlands etc., the following links provide clear, common sense help based on a sound feel for the language:

http://www.chicagomanual.org/cmosfaq.CapitalizationTitles.html http://fmwriters.com/community/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=17&topic_id=33574&mesg_id=33576

Many of the other bands on http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:British_musical_groups&from=T are alphabetised incorrectly too. The list should go like this:

  1. Talulah Gosh
  2. The Teardrop Explodes
  3. The Tears
  4. Tears for Fears
  5. Teenage Fanclub
  6. Televise
  7. Television Personalities (band)
  8. Ten Years After
  9. Terrorvision
  10. Texas (band)
  11. The The
  12. Theatre of Hate
  13. Theaudience
  14. Them (band)

The Guardian style guide uses "the The" when not beginning a sentence. The idea is the first the is an article, the second a proper noun, so follows the same case as the Beatles, the Headcoatees. http://www.theguardian.com/guardian-observer-style-guide-t Mongreilf (talk) 12:51, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

needs much work

Someone ought to take on some basic stuff here. For instance, what to do with the soundtrack album that was

released February 2010 on The The's Cineola imprint in March 2010

which I really want too simply erase.

Another thing: is the oft-repeated "Cineola imprint" the property of The The (as the text attests) or of Matt Johnson (as the text attests)?
Weeb Dingle (talk) 05:33, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

As well: despite obsessive use throughout of the "not a typo" tag, examples of both The The and the The are easy to spot — all, of course, duly tagged as "not a typo."
