That's a good point. I'm not clear on how this relates to the cooperative movement at large - an ESOP is a tax-advantaged employee benefit plan, implemented in the process of ownership transfer that can be partial or total, as opposed to co-ops which are set up from the start to be collectively owned, with a charter. The National Center for Employee Ownership has been trying to spread the word around the globe, places like the UK and South Africa, and some countries already do try to promote employee ownership. However, ESOPs are a very specific tax benefit defined in the US tax code - there are other collective ownership benefits, such as tax-free status of 501(c)(3) organizations, which are written up and discussed separately from ESOPs on Wikipedia. As a fairly inexperienced editor, I'm not sure where we would draw the boundary between ESOPs and other pro-collective ownership incentives, especially in other countries with different tax codes and corporate structures. There should be a separate article about ESOPs outside the US, and I'll try to come up with some information; for now, I'll amend this timeline by reinforcing that it's US-specific. I am new to Wiki editing, but I believe a link from this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Employee_stock_ownership_plan might fix the problem. The history of ESOP legislation in USA is a story in itself and developed very differently from the co-op movement although they were designed to address some of the same economic problems.
