Tupper's pre-war experiments were done with nitrocellulose. Polyethylene was not yet available in quantity and was not manufactured at the Dupont Viscoloid Company where he worked. He did not start using polyethylene until after the war. And he had no part in inventing either material. His innovation was his use of raw polyethylene. DuPont considered the material's flexibility to be a weakness, and had been adding fillers to it to make it more stiff.
