Proposal to merge USCGC Jarvis (WHEC-725) with BNS Somudro Joy (F-28)
[edit]Generally accepted ship article naming conventions suggests that "(A)n article about a ship that changed name or nationality should be placed at the best-known name, with a redirect from the other name", or "(B)ut if the ship had significant careers in two navies, it may be best to create two articles with one ending at the transfer and the other beginning then, depending on how long the articles are and how extensive the transformation of the ship." While I would agree that the article USCGC Jarvis (WHEC-725) leaves a lot to be desired as an article, the ship itself has a forty year history of service. I would suggest that the opportunity to flesh this article about Jarvis has not yet come to pass and that some future editor be allowed to complete the article to at least B-class. I, personally, have an interest in all things "U.S. Coast Guard", but simply have not had the time to do anything with this particular article. There are but a handful of people devoting time to editing articles relating to the U.S. Coast Guard. I would point out that while Jarvis had a forty year career in United States service, Somudro Joy has been in commission with the Bangladesh Navy less than two weeks. This is not to say that the the ship won't have a distinguished career in the service of Bangladesh, but that has not yet occurred.
I would suggest that the article "USCGC Jarvis (WHEC-725)" be merged with "BNS Somudro Joy (F-28)" and the surviving article be "USCGC Jarvis (WHEC-725)" with a redirect from "BNS Somudro Joy (F-28)" with due weight placed on the service to each country placed in the article. The service career of Somudro Joy should not displace the weight of forty year of U.S. Coast Guard service at this point in the ship's history at this point in the history of the merged article. It may come to pass at some future time that Somudro Joy would become more notable than Jarvis, and in that case modifications to the article could be made to reflect that.
Before I attempt any edits of the article "USCGC Jarvis (WHEC-725)" I would like to get the discussion to a consensus about the future of both articles. I am notifying the IP editor which suggested this action and will notify other possible interested editors on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships. Regards. Cuprum17 (talk) 16:59, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
- Comment I agree that the articles should be merged, but I would prefer the new Bangladeshi name. While forty years in the United States Coast Guard are quite a feat, the part on her service in the Bangladeshi Navy already outweighs her prior engagements. Another point is that she was one of many vessels in the USCG but is currently the largest warship of Bangladesh. ÄDA - DÄP VA (talk) 19:21, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Agree merge A merger would be entirely consistent with the wise guidance quoted above by Cuprum17. Suggest merge the two, and consider a fork if and when both history sections grow too much. To suggest that either the Jarvis or Somudro Joy will attract more encyclopaedic content than the other is WP:CRYSTAL. On notable events, so far, Bangladesh is leading USA one-nil. Frankly, on ship articles, too much heat is generated in arguments about which ship name should prevail; to me it matters little as long as it is not completely irrational. Readers reach the right page just as easily with appropriate redirects.Davidships (talk) 22:08, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Don't support merge Given that this is apparently the largest ship to have been operated by the Bangladeshi Navy and will presumably have a lengthy career with this service, it seems sensible to have separate articles for her US and Bangladeshi service. Nick-D (talk) 06:34, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Comment There was not a consensus reached on this proposal, there for I am removing the merge tag from the article page. I will continue to edit the article adding information for the ships service to the Coast Guard up to and including the transfer to the Bangladesh Navy. Cuprum17 (talk) 18:52, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

[edit]Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request its removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
