Is there a Standard
[edit]I was under the impression -- I don't know where from -- that the use of the video DVD logo requires that the disc meet a particular standard, and that this standard requires that UOPs only be used for anti-copyright warnings. Is anyone aware of such a thing? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.4.200.120 (talk) 22:28, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Not all FBI warnings do this. Some FBI warnings have a skip feature. Pressing fast forward will display a next icon. 108.66.234.9 (talk) 00:42, 4 November 2016 (UTC)
- DVDs are an international standard and not all jurisdictions show FBI warnings. 194.207.86.26 (talk) 08:51, 27 November 2021 (UTC)
Scene it?
[edit]Is the "scene it reference really necessary? it could be spam.--82.153.199.6 (talk) 15:15, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- I think it is an appropriate example of a type of dvd-based game, and certainly illustrates the usefulness of the UOP flag in some situations. 70.177.24.152 (talk) 03:31, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think that some reference to DVD games like Scene It is relevant, as it's an example of another use for the function, as opposed to just forcing people to watch commercials. Doesn't have to necessarily have to refer to scene it, but I think interactive DVD games in general should be mentioned, the only other example of one i can think of is the DVD version of Atmosfear, but not sure if that uses UOP 94.72.204.163 (talk) 00:01, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
- The section was blanked years ago with this unexplained edit. I am putting it back; it isn't NPOV to only list the dtrawbacks and not the benefits. --Guy Macon (talk) 02:29, 19 March 2012 (UTC)
who?
[edit]Any idea which studios are doing this the most? -Rolypolyman 04:38, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
- Disney is infamous for it. --148.240.253.118 23:31, 7 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, often for trailers. r3m0t talk 13:27, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
- Do some new regular consumer DVD players ignore these? If only special ones do, they're going after the wrong market by removing navigation ability beyond UOPs ;) Paperweight 06:22, 21 April 2007 (UTC)
- Re Disney - The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest DVD has around 10 trailers, commercials, and whatnot in front of the main menu. It's astounding. Joseph N Hall 20:29, 1 May 2007 (UTC)
- Yeah, it's disgusting. Actually one reason why I download films instead of buy them on DVD is simply to be able to watch the film properly - without being subjected to junk adverts! The corporations are shooting themselves in the foot. If they want my money they they need to provide me with a watchable DVD. Then I'd gladly pay. EuroSong talk 17:19, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
- actually i was wondering about something related to this, i got a pirated DVD in China of Spirited Away which features about ten UOP'd minutes of someone (I think John Lassiter? i don't have the disc with me, so i can't check) banging on about how great the film is before the film actually starts - is this the case on the real thing? because if it is, that's bloody terrible! if not...well, i'll chalk it up to shoddy pirating i suppose.77.86.98.252 (talk) 21:26, 5 April 2008 (UTC)
PUO
[edit]uhh...isn't it "PUO" .. prohibited user operation .. ???
Which website was first?
[edit]The site http://www.any-dvd-clone.com/knowledge/dvd-protection-types.html contains text identical to that in this article. Was it copied from Wikipedia, or did Wikipedia copy that site? EuroSong talk 17:17, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
Another source and walkthrough
[edit]This site has all the details to find the damn UOP and edit them. http://mpucoder.com/DVD/
First I rip with vobcopy (linux) to descramble CSS and save to HDD. Then hexedit VTS_01_0.IFO. Offset 0x00CC length 4 bytes is sector pointer to VTS_PGCI. A sector is 2048 bytes. At that sector, offset 12 length 4 bytes is the offset to VTS_PGC relative to VTS_PGCI. From there, offset 8 length 4 bytes are the UOP flags. Zero them all. To remove region restriction, hexedit VIDEO_TS.IFO, find offset 0x0022, length 4 bytes. Zero them all. Burn the DVD.
There. It took me a long time to find the information. And I will make sure to experiment and to keep posting it. --Claudelepoisson (talk) 02:02, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
Counter Counter Countermeasures? Really?
[edit]Seriously?
- Yeah, who on earth named these titles?! - Dustin Howett (talk) 23:46, 20 January 2012 (UTC)
- Do you have a suggestion for better titles? --Guy Macon (talk) 14:47, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
- I thought the same thing when I saw this, although I don't know how you'd phrase it better. I'm just waiting for the counter counter counter countermeasures. 64.134.243.80 (talk) 18:06, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
- I needed hand puppets to figured it out. How about "Measures taken to..." or "Defeating..." Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:05, 3 February 2012 (UTC)
