Original rationale for deletion

[edit]

This is why I put the proposed deletion template on this article:

Obscure biographical stub - no other page references this one, and the details provided are scant, uncertain and unsourced. Either someone can make it relevant to other pages on Wikipedia, or make it valuable as an article that stands by itself, otherwise I think it is a good candidate to be deleted.

Baranov's fate?

Local media were giving conflicting reports over the fate of Valery Baranov, head of the Joint Army Command of the North Caucasus, with some reports saying he had been killed and some saying he was still alive, but one of his legs torn away by the blast. Spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry's Interior Troops Vasily Panchenkov said "doctors are struggling to save his life," according to Interfax. [1]

Col. Gen. Valery Baranov (search), commander of Russian troops in the region, died at the scene, a ministry official said on condition of anonymity. Kadyrov died about 30 minutes after the blast. [2]

Colonel General Valery Baranov, commander of the Joint Group of Forces in the North Caucasus, was seriously injured in the explosion. President Putin's envoy to the Southern Federal District, Vladimir Yakovlev, said Baranov was in "grave condition" following an operation to amputate one of his legs. [3]

In order to write about topics having to do with Russia, it is a great advantage to actually be able to read Russian. Here's the #1 result on Google for Валерий Баранов: http://www.rg.ru/2005/07/28/baranov.html. Why is he unimportant? Why is he important? There's been almost a half-dozen commanders of Russian Federation forces in Chechnya since the beginning of the Second Chechen War. It is also a great advantage to do research on a subject before you write about it. Unlike what your latest edit implies, Valeriy Baranov was never the commander of the North Caucus military district, and there is no such thing as the "Joint Group of Forces" of the North Caucus. In the mean time, since you object to the proposal for deletion template, I will add the article to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Moonshiner 01:25, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Argh. Why do you think he's SO unimportant? Btw, LOTS of articles say he was "commander of the Joint Group of Forces in the North Caucasus" so your claims sound very strange. For example, RIAN (official Russian agency): [4] (a month before he was blown up). The Joint Group is supposedly known as OGV, according to agentura.ru. Also "Joint Group of Forces for the counter-terrorist operations in the North Caucasus." --HanzoHattori 01:39, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
