Flagship University??

[edit]

The statement 'The University is the flagship academic institution in the state...' is merely someone's opinion. What is it that makes USD <THE> 'Flagship' University? USD does not have the largest student enrollment in SD, it does not have the largest campus acreage in SD, it was not the first university to go Division I in SD etc...Someone please justify this individual's statement.

This quote came from the Flagship University subheading in the 'Flagship' article here on Wikipedia:

According to Robert Berdahl, former Berkeley chancellor, the phrase "flagship" came into existence in the 1950s when the Morrill Act schools were joined by newer campuses built in a wave of postwar expansion of state university system.

Berdahl commented on the prestige and elite status of flagship campuses in the following:

...those of us in "systems" of higher education are frequently actively discouraged from using the term "flagship" to refer to our campuses because it is seen as hurtful to the self-esteem of colleagues at other institutions in our systems. The use of the term is seen by some as elitist and boastful. It is viewed by many, in the context of the politics of higher education, as "politically incorrect." ... Only in the safe company of alumni is one permitted to use the term.

elitist...boastful...politically incorrect...

I am not saying some other university may be the Flagship University, it just seems a little arrogant. None of the other SD university articles seem so boastful. What makes USD better than everyone else?

Family Needs Section

[edit]

Does this section have value in an encyclopedia - especially the grocery stores? Is there any notability here - any businesses that are unique to Vermillion? Lmielke359 22:42, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

After a long time of nobody objecting I have deleted the family needs section as well as the main street district and cherry street district. If someone wants to add in pertanent information to these sections feel free to do so but it shouldn't just be a list of local and national chain stores. Image: Map of the States

[edit]

I noticed that the wrong state is marked on the map of the United States. I don't know how to change that, can anyone do that please?—Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.35.142.30 (talkcontribs)

Notable residents

[edit]

It has come to my attention that a participant from an MTV reality show has been added and removed from this section several times. I would suggest that anyone considering re-adding her take a look at the notability guidelines and the guidelines for biographies of living people. She does not meet any of these criteria. Thanks. Employers

[edit]

suggest adding Stream Global Services to employers, they currently employ 287 local and area residents and represent a large portion of positions availabe in the area. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.235.241.102 (talk) 00:00, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Parks

[edit]

is it really necessary to include the size of the pool, that it has snacks, and that the park has green grass? that seems rather unimportant and not of any real significant value or description outside of any other "park". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.235.241.102 (talk) 23:27, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment is also very unimportant. 173.215.56.80 (talk) 12:01, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
