History of Lohumi or Lohani Surname in Uttarakhand:

During Mughal rule, Best Brahman from all over India fled to mountainous region of Uttarakhand near Himalayas in disguise along with their scriptures. They were believed to take west route though Rajasthan. Some Charana (shepherds) helped them in hiding. Alongwith charan they shifted towards North India in Summer grazing the cow towards upward. Moutanious region of Uttarakhand was safe for Hindus and Brahmans with enough hiding place. The mountainous region was untouched and never ruled by Mugal emperor. However British reached there using technology.

One of the Brahmins was separated and arrested by the Chauhan King 👑. The Chauhan king 👑 had his Kingdom stretching from Nepal till Panipat. The Brahmin requested the Chauhan King to set him free as he is innocent. The Chauhan King said if you innocent the iron bars cannot keep you inside. The Brahmin requested the Chauhan King to fetch a Kalash of water after bath next day. Next day the Chauhan King 👑 appeared with a Kalash of water. The Brahmin sprinkled some drops of water on iron bars and they melted down. The Chauhan king was impressed and made him Rajpurohit.

The Chauhan king organised a big Yagna. Other Brahmins wanted to test the Rajpurohit and kept iron bars in Havana Kund instead of wood. Anything burnt in Havana Kund is called Homa. The Rajpurohit used his mantra shakti or Vidya to burn (homa) iron (loh) bars. He was applauded 👏 and respected by the Chauhan king 👑 and given title of Loh + homi = Lohumi. In Kumaoni language they are called Lohanju or Lohumiji. Some people spell as Lohani.

The King decided to give the Lohumi Rajpurohit whatever he asked for. The Lohumi Rajpurohit asked for a place to grow Pumpkin seeds. As he planted pumpkin seeds, creepers of pumpkin spread over ground and covered 7 villages. The cluster of 7 villages gifted to Lohumi Rajpurohit are called Satralli. The best Brahmins from all over India settled in those 7 villages. Satralli is situated near Almora district.

The entire story of the tile 'Lohumi' and Satralli Village is mentioned in a 'Tamra Patra' or copper sheet kept at a museum in the Almora district of Uttarakhand.

Lohumi are one the best and upper caste or Ucch Kuleen Brahman of Uttarakhand.
