Reason for removal of Category:People from California

[edit]

Since someone questioned the reason for the removal of Category:People from California I wanted to explain in greater detail the reasoning here.

Category:People from California is supposed to be pretty much completely subdivided by two sub-categorization schemes: subdivision by county/city, and subdivision by occupation. In other words articles about Californians are not supposed to appear directly under Category:People from California but should instaed be subcategorized if possible under either by-county or by-occupation subcategories if at all possible. Those sub-schemes are intended to completely cover all or almost all possible articles about Californians, allowing readers to find Californians either by specific region or by specific occupation.

In this particular article's case, the gentleman is categorized under the occupational category Category:California military personnel because he is also categorized under other related military occupational categories. Therefore this subcategory overrides his placement within Category:People from California.

Finally, in the history someone mentioned that he is also a consultant and that perhaps another category should be added for that. I have not added a consultant category because the article doesn't even include the word "consultant" at all, nor is he already categorized as such. He is primarilly known, it seems, for his military service, and therefore that is the primary occupational subcategory used. So if he is, indeed, also verifiably and notably known as a businessman or consultant I'd recommend adding that to the article, with proper citations, and then adding the appropriate occupational subcategories. Without citation and without it being the article, though, he shouldn't be categorized as a consultant. Dugwiki 15:58, 6 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
