I might propose a slight variation that follows the grammar used in Te Ara (the source linked above):

ALT0a: ... that the Mānuka canoe is said to have voyaged to the Polynesian homeland and brought back tubers that wouldn't grow?

Makes it clearer that the subject is a canoe (rather than a collective noun), and also resolves any ambiguity about singular or plural. Cielquiparle (talk) 09:19, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
