Hey Dudley Miles, India data is auto-fetched from Wikidata to here and its article page. On wikidata, it has to be manually updated. I generally update it daily but couldn't do so for last two days, but have updated it now. So, it can be updated on Wikidata if its seen lagging. - Mayankj429 (talk) 05:07, 4 August 2020 (UTC)

Botswana

The totals for Botswana now exclude those repatriated. Does anyone know if those repatriated have been added to their respective home countries lists? Or even which countries are concerned? If not, should they continue to be listed under Botswana? As precedent, cases on cruiseships continue to be listed there, even though long since repatriated, in some cases even when they are added to the national total (such as the 10 Diamond Princess cases of Australians, counted by Australian authorities, but still included in the DP totals). 664 people who tested positive have been voluntarily repatriated to their respective countries and are not part of the confirmed case count as a result the Government of Botswana does not include the transferred-out cases.

I did see the footnote, but that isn’t my question which remains unanswered. The question remains: Were the repatriated persons added to their country totals on repatriation? Or have they just been deleted and are now uncounted? If the latter, then they should continue to be counted in Botswana. Do we even know what countries they were repatriated to? Why has the number of deaths gone down in the UK?

This is because all deaths were previously counted in England where there had been a positive test, even if the test was three months ago and the person died in a traffic accident. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland only count deaths within 28 days of a positive test. When the govt found this out, they reduced the figure to bring England in line with the other UK countries. Experts say that the change is valid as a test showing someone had COVID three months ago is irrelevant to the cause of death, although six weeks would be better as it can be that long between a test and someone dying of COVID. Can we trust Russia's death count?

Serendipodous, the validity of any location's COVID case figures is not Wkipedia's responsibility. Editors of the template are only responsible for grabbing the numbers from the most reliable sources available, keeping up to date with possible changes in sources, responding to edit requests on this talk page, and adding footnotes for any other necessary details that don't necessarily fit into the table's default columns. Given Russia's aging demographic profile you would expect that Russia would have far more deaths for that number of cases. Of course they may have found some way to protect their elderly whilst letting the illness run rampant among the young. Or they might have tested more and found far more cases than some other countries. Or this could be the usual Russian state response of creating an official version of the facts that doesn't fully accord with reality. I'm reminded of the Chernobyl news management process.... The problem with Russia, and some other countries, is that we don't have a reliable source for what's going on there. ϢereSpielChequers 08:54, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

For most countries, Wikipedia is using official sources, not the most reliable, and the methods used to calculate the figure in each country vary widely. Russia claims its figure is accurate because they autopsy all suspected COVID deaths and only count those confirmed by the autopsy. No one knows how accurate the figure really is or what the figure would be if other countries adopted the same method. Statisticians think that the best method is to compare the overall death rate with the average in previous years, although this includes indirect COVID deaths of people whose treatment for other conditions was put off because of the emergency. By this method the UK has the worst death rate in Europe, an excess of over 60,000 in total, but at present it has a negative COVID death rate because deaths are now below the average for the time of year. Need a link to collapse it back to its original scroll box size

Many tables and divs on Wikipedia have expand/collapse links. Some expanding divs or tables are set up with only an "expand" link. I prefer that they also have the "collapse" link that shows up too.

Some people want to get past long lists quickly when done with them, and go back to scrolling through the prose. That is not easy if a table stays open after expansion, and can't be closed back to its original size. Especially this table with its huge notes section at the end of the expanded table.

Please have a collapse link show up when the table is expanded.

That way I can hit the home key on my keyboard to get back to the top of the article (COVID-19 pandemic by country and territory). The top of the article is where the top of the table is found. Timeshifter, I'm afraid that won't be possible. While there is a technical solution to this, the edit notice for the template relevant to your concerns is as follows, with the specific clause bolded:

Do not add or remove any columns, change scrolling or collapsing.

RayDeeUx. Why would anybody be against a collapse link that brings it back to its original scrolling box size? I am not sure that warning is against that.

The warning was probably written to keep the technical work done by agreement, and not done by random editors changing the format of the table without discussion. I am discussing it now.

Uk and Spain: same situation, different treatments

The cases are different. The UK stopped giving figures in March when the total was 135. Spain stopped on 18 May when the total was 150,376 and presumably no one has noticed until now. I suggest replacing the unreferenced note saying "Excludes serology–confirmed cases." with one saying that the figure for recoveries is as of 18 May. However, to avoid errors I think any changes should be made by someone who understands Spainish, which I do not. Dudley Miles (talk) 11:03, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

Add a disclaimer about totals not summing up properly?

After seeing Capewearer's response to a question, it occurred to me that we might want to append a footnote or similar stating that the sum of cases in different regions may not equal the total reported in the "Worldwide" row as the latter uses sources like JHU that differ from nation-specific sources. Greece - Recovered Cases data is wrong and has no attributed source

Official data from Greece's government only tracks Total Cases and Total Deaths - covid19.gov.gr

Google uses the data from this table to display the number of Recovered Cases in search results, but there is no source for where the current number comes from.

Ideally we would find a source for the current figure.

I suggest either changing Greece to "No Data" or returning back to the figure to 1374. Neither are good reflections of reality, but at least it's more consistent with other reports, like Johns Hopkins.

• I found a figure of 1374 Recovered Cases that Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center uses for their statistics - it's not clear where that figure comes from.
  • Data can be found here: Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center-> Global Map -> look at Global Deaths columns and select Global Recovered.
    • Greece has 1374 as of Sep 8, 2020.
• This same figure of 1374 comes up again on Covid Checker by Sitata (Enter "Greece" and then click on COVID-19 stats). Once again, it's not clear where Sitata pulls their Recovered Cases data from.
  • Of note is that the last time data was changed was on Apr 30, 2020 when the Recovered Cases changed from 577 to 1374.
• While the aforementioned references are for from ideal sources, it should be noted that even the Our World In Data datasets do NOT provide any data for Recovered Cases for Greece.
  • Their data is hosted here on GitHub via covid.ourworldindata.org and their ever-updating CSV dataset can be accessed here

Better not to echo an out-of-date figure, even if it is used by JHU. Is there any statement available from the Greek government that they would stop releasing recovery figures from a certain date (as with the UK and Netherlands), or commentary from reliable sources that they had done so (as with Brazil, for a time)? No longer kept up to date?

While I appreciate the point that Worldometer is not considered accurate as to sources, one might as well go there for info, since this table is not being kept up to date. Especially in the bottom half of the table many countries have not been updated since Sept 21 (the date of access to the source cited). Many of these sources have much more recent information - just click on the link cited. Is the interest in maintaining this template waning, or are there insufficient editors working on it? I’ve been following and updating the data in a file ln my own device, and many figures have not changed in several days. In general this applies to many countries from Cameroon down.
