Conditional narrative[edit]

@BrownHairedGirl: I saw the text currently displayed at Category:Populated places established in 1168, from {{PopPlaceEstCat}}. Neat work.

How about incorporating that or something similar into this template, if type = Populated places, to discourage creation of decade/year subcats in early periods e.g. Category:Populated places established in the 12th century? – Fayenatic London 14:19, 11 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, @Fayenatic. I'm not sure that I did more than tweak {{PopPlaceEstCat}}, but glad you like.
I think that's a good idea, but it would be most helpful if it covered all establishment types where we have a cut-off date, and preferably linked to the relevant CFD(s) so that it's clear this isn't something you and I dreamt up on our own. Do you have the energy to dig out any relevant CFDs? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:08, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Good idea. Here's a start.
Populated places: by year for 1500 and later, by decade from the 1300s to the 1490s, by century from the 10th century BC to the 13th century, and by millennium for the 2nd millennium BC and earlier. Endorsed at 2015 Dec 28.
States and territories: by year for 1000 and later, by decade from 0s AD to the 990s (2017 November 23), by century BC from 20th BC to 1st BC (2015 May 17), and by millennium for 3rd millennium BC and earlier.
(No CFD found for use of millennia before C20 BC, but C24 BC and 2333 BC were deleted as empty after [1].)
I intend to note more types here later. – Fayenatic London 20:24, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Companies by type[edit]

This template generates unwanted parents (i) for millennium, (ii) NNth-century establishments even if the category is in a suitable sub-cat.

E.g. Category:Health care companies established in the 21st century was in Health care companies established in the 3rd millennium, which was deleted per Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2019 June 6; and in 21st-century establishments as well as Companies established in the 21st century.

I replaced the template longhand.[2]

Is there a better template that could have been used instead? If not, I suggest that

(i) the millennium parameter should become optional (the comments in the June 6 CFD suggest that many of the current millennium categories are not required);
(ii) we add a parameter to specify a more specific parent in place of NNth-century establishments, e.g. "companies" -> Category:Companies established in the 21st century and not Category:21st-century establishments. – Fayenatic London 08:09, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Millennium categories for more types of companies have now been nominated for deletion at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2019_June_15#Companies_by_millennium. – Fayenatic London 13:20, 19 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have made both the changes suggested above. – Fayenatic London 12:15, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

#if instead of #ifexist?[edit]

Parameter 4 is either absent or equals BC (which always exists). Shouldn't every occurrence of

{{#ifexist:{{{4}}}|x|y}}

be changed to

{{#if:{{{4|}}}|x|y}}

Eliminate Future?[edit]

For EstcatCenturyType, it doesn't make sense to me to include the future in the displayed possibilities, as possible entries to look up shouldn't be in the future. Should that be eliminated from the display, links to be checked for existence?Naraht (talk) 14:25, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
