Rendering bug
[edit]Currently, Ploticus only supports an arbitrary hardcoded limit of 500 entries to generate the clickmap.
We're considering options to solve the issue, I contacted Debian package maintainer and one of the original author to know if they are interested to increase the limit. This is a little tricky, as the software isn't maintained anymore. --Dereckson (talk) 03:56, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
- @Jrkenti: Just to explain a bit more, <timeline> tags have a limit of 500 links (clickable areas in the image). This template has more than 500 links; the links that push the count over the limit of 500 (in this case, the more recent astronauts on the ISS) cannot be clicked, and the Wikimedia server logs are filling up with errors spewed by the old Ploticus rendering software that is used to draw these timelines. Please consider refactoring the template so there are fewer than 500 links. — This, that and the other (talk) 11:19, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
Split
[edit]I propose splitting launches and station visits into two different templates.
This will make the template less crowded and will fixed the rendering bug. --Svgalbertian (talk) 15:57, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
- I went ahead and did it. Please see Template:Space station crew timeline --Svgalbertian (talk) 17:06, 24 July 2018 (UTC)
Split out orbital and sub orbital
[edit]Because of the coming regular commercial suborbital flights, I wonder if they will remain significant enough for this chart.
The arguments of what is space and the Kármán line make even including them controversial.
My proposal is to make the template orbital flights only and to remove all suborbital only flights.
It can be renamed Template:Human orbital spaceflight timeline and a title added to the chart to make it clear. --Svgalbertian (talk) 20:09, 23 July 2021 (UTC)
The idea of updating such a chart indefinitely is inappropriate. Removing suborbital flights, though, would remove much of the very early history. "The first 60 years" might be an appropriate point to stop, as encyclopedic records of commercial flights would be unnecessary. Many thanks to Svgalbertian and others for keeping it up to date.
