Values from instances of this template have been copied to Wikidata, and transclusions in external links sections have had the migrated values removed. No changes to visible article text were made. If the template has a name parameter, that may also have been removed, making use of {{PAGENAMEBASE}} instead. (24 September 2016)

Accessdate[edit]

Many of the calls to this template include accessdate but this parameter is not handled in the template. It would be good if this template can make use of the citation templates so that it is more standard while also generating COinS metadata. LepIndex taxonid changes on NHM site[edit]

The NHM site has moved from the old format with a decimal place and a zero to complete integer taxonids and to allow the old ones to work, I have added a truncation expression to the template. It may perhaps be rolled back once all the template usages move to Wikidata and have the data corrected there. Shyamal (talk) 13:41, 16 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Format changes to template[edit]

As the format of the URLs at LepIndex changed, it has been apparent that this template is very useful and I've been using it to fix the links in references that no longer work. At Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Lepidoptera#LepIndex Pigsonthewing said "Make {{LepIndex}} a wrapper for {{cite web}}, you mean?" and if I understand that right, that sounds like a great idea. I'd love to see a change from its

current form:

Auxacia bilineella at The Global Lepidoptera Names Index, Natural History Museum

to:

"Auxacia bilineella". The Global Lepidoptera Names Index. Natural History Museum, London. Retrieved April 19, 2018.

or even the format I've been using in the past to link to LepIndex:

Beccaloni, George; et al., eds. (January 2018). "Auxacia bilineella Ragonot, 1887". The Global Lepidoptera Names Index. Natural History Museum, London. Retrieved April 19, 2018.

though I don't think it would be possible to pull up the current date of the database (found at http://www.nhm.ac.uk/our-science/data/lepindex/lepindex/) or the full "Current Comb:"

Like I said, I've been using this template a lot of late and would love to see improvements to it. I've been formatting references as {{LepIndex |id=9219 |name=Auxacia bilineella}} Retrieved April 19, 2018. In light of the post above about accessdate, would it be possible to quick code an access date into the template so those dates would carry over to any new format?

Because I've been thinking and don't know how hard these things would be, I'd like to put them out there for future thought:

Sometimes the title of the target page is a subspecies like Choaspes hemixanthus ssp. furcata where "ssp." would not be italicized. I could provide a list of such abbreviations (but so far, the only one I've seen in LepIndex is "ssp.").
The form of the binomials in LepIndex is "AUXACIA bilineella" with the generic name in capital letters. If the template could change that automagically to sentence case, that would save a bunch of time.

An extra line feed?[edit]

@Shyamal: Please take a look at Fire grid burnet and Chrostosoma haematica. It seems like when the template is used outside of ref tags ("<ref></ref>"), it adds an extra carriage return or line feed or something. I could fix it for those two by moving the text after the template into the template as an |accessdate=, but I don't think it should be adding the line feed. Not done: That would violate WP:CITEVAR at many, if not the vast majority, of the articles in which this template is used. I clicked on the first couple of articles in the What Links Here list, and I see this template used in Myrrha and Morpho, for example. Adding an ampersand would break CITEVAR in those articles. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:50, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
