Template talk:User infobox
Meta template
[edit]This template uses evil meta templates. Conditional templates are being phased out; please do not create loads more use. While I like the template, there should be some way of not causing strain on the servers. Cheers, Sam Korn 12:30, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- The only 'meta-template' it includes is the babel section at the bottom... which uses double inclusion just like all the 'Babel-#' templates. If you really think that's a server problem then I can remove it... but there are 40 some odd other templates out there which have been doing the same thing for a few years now. Presumably people will just do, parametersparameters and get exactly the same results (and same double inclusion on Babel section) as this template. --CBD ☎ ✉ 12:38, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- I meant the if templates that go throughout. Cheers, Sam Korn 12:40, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I'm now very confused. What are the {{{if's doing throughout? Couldn't you work the Babel functionality into the template without calling the Babel template itself? Sam Korn 12:49, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- I meant the if templates that go throughout. Cheers, Sam Korn 12:40, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Ok, the if template has been deleted. This uses a parameter named {if} (three brackets = parameter, two = template) to create a simple true/false switch. Since the parameter is evaluated in the User Infobox template itself, rather than being a call to another template, there is no meta-templating involved. On the Babel stuff... I had included a 'copy' of Babel (upgraded with the same 'if parameter' switching to hide unused boxes) here for simplicity. Since Babel calls various 'User <whatever>' templates that is a meta-template, albeit one already in common use and seemingly unlikely to be deprecated. I have removed this 'Babel copy' from 'User Infobox' and anyone who wants to show Babel content can just make a call to that separately. --CBD ☎ ✉ 13:08, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
- Cool, thanks. I won't use it myself, but I now have no objections to others using it. Thanks for your work. Sam Korn 13:55, 5 January 2006 (UTC)
Bad formatting?
I have the template up on my Userpage, and one of the problems that I see with it is when I have the "Contact Info" section, everything is bolded until the end of that particular section. Bad formatting, perhaps? --Mark 21:56, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I think I've fixed the problem you pointed out. I hope I didn't break too much in the process. John Reed Riley 01:26, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- I see. Looks better now :)
- Thanks!

Userboxes
This template does not seem to get along too well with Userboxes. This may just be my poor understanding of Wikipedia/HTML, but I can't seem to figure out how to get userboxes to appear in the space next to the userinfobox. --Chris Griswold 21:54, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "in the space next to the userinfobox"? To the left? Below? Or inside in the Userboxes section? John Reed Riley 22:08, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- I looked at your homepage, and I think I have a better idea of what you meant. You want the userboxes to show up to the left of the userinfobox, right? You had the Babel-X template between them and the user infobox template. They're both "float: right; clear: right" which messed up your layout. [1] John Reed Riley 22:27, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- Ah, thanks. --Chris Griswold 09:46, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- I just looked, and the text and all the Userboxes are in between the User infobox and the Babel box. I've removed the Babel box because I don't think it will all work together.--Chris Griswold 09:48, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Can't get rid of "}; text-align: center;">}}"
Hi. When ever I use this template on my Userpage I can't get rid of the }; text-align: center;">}} line at the top of the page. Any idea of what I should do?
Thanks, DeepSpace 15:01, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
- The problem was that you were skipping everything prior to the 'userboxes' section and it wasn't closing the image row properly as a result. I converted the way the image row works to be consistent with the rest and that shouldn't happen any more. --CBDunkerson 15:37, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot. DeepSpace 15:46, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Border Colour
[edit]Is it possible to change the colour of the borders of this infobox without having to hack away at the code behind its scenes? Thanks in advance, CountdownCrispy ( ? 23:04, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- You want an extra border to display along the sides? Then you'd have to hack (copy) the tamplate yourself. You can however change the header color by specifying any HTML color at the color parameter. Edokter 17:04, 5 December 2006 (UTC)
E-mail Tag
[edit]Email tag gets splits it into two lines in the info box. I changed it to em@il. Now it looks cooler. You can revert if you think its not good. --Jaseerabubakar 09:29, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- Are you certain it wasn't just on your screen? I don't recall it being split on my page. Honestly, this look more l33t than useful. -- Huntster T • @ • C 17:18, 21 November 2006 (UTC)
- I've never had the email tag split in my browser either. It used to be "E-mail", so if it was being split, it was probably the result of the hyphen. Personally, I'd prefer "E-mail" or "Email" to "em@il". At the very least I think it should the tag should be capitalized to be consistent. John Reed Riley 22:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Aye, I strongly suggest this be reverted. This is a stylistic change, and should be the actual word, E-mail. -- Huntster T • @ • C 23:26, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
- Hi, May be its problem with my browser only. For me its coming in two lines. If no one else experiences that issue, I think its fair to revert it back. And about capitalising the first letter.. I guess it should be either Electronic Mail or e-mail or Email(without hyphen). (thats what I gathered from a little googling). Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
- P.S: John, I appreciate you intimating me about this discussion. --Jaseerabubakar 06:59, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Any ideas on how to enter an e-mail field in an Organization Template Infobox?Jarzinos (talk) 22:56, 4 August 2011 (UTC)
Links to other wiki user pages
[edit]I have many different user pages around the WikiaMedia project. Would it be ok to add a section to these pages? --Steinninn 15:31, 16 May 2007 (UTC)
- I would also like this, maybe a section like the "Contact info" bit and we can list our user names. (EG: it would have someone like |commons = <your user name>) Peachey88 (Talk Page | Contribs) 11:29, 9 December 2007 (UTC)
Image size
[edit]Hi all. Today Sarah Goldberg (talk · contribs) changed the image size in the template. I can see how that would make her page look better, but it make my image rather small. Perhaps we should put in a variable that allows users to adjust the image size as needed? —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 15:58, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
I'm trying to make width and font-color sections, but I can't get them right. Can someone do that better? Thanks Sarah Goldberg 19:00, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
- Done. --CBD 11:04, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
Added some things
[edit]I added blood type, if that's ok with people simply add this parameter:
|bloodtype=
followed by whatever blood type group you are.
I also wikilinked Birth date, birth place and aliases. — *H¡ρρ¡ ¡ρρ¡ 13:52, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- A line of whitespace now appears above the infobox (see here). I'll have a go at removing it. - Dudesleeper · Talk 17:11, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
- Hey, all my edits are gone! Were they really that bad? — *H¡ρρ¡ ¡ρρ¡ 11:15, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
- I restored the changes without the extra whitespace at the top which was causing the concern. --CBD 12:44, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
IM Profiles
[edit]I managed to get this to link to your yahoo profile page, and tried to get it to link to your IC page, but I have run into some problems that I can't figure out. Couldn't someone look and figure it out? Kc4 21:15, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
- Problem should be fixed, see diff. You forgot to add the }}'s after the URL code. In the future, do not make changes such as these to live templates...use the sandbox or a subpage of your User space. Cheers! -- Huntster T • @ • C 21:55, 21 August 2007 (UTC)
Ancestry
[edit]I think ancestry should be added, someone please add it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.167.172.54 (talk) 00:17, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
Colour
[edit]Is there some sort of standard set of colour for this (eg: female/male) or not? is it just any colour we want? Peachey88 (Talk Page | Contribs) 01:03, 28 January 2008 (UTC)
- No standard, use whatever color suits you. —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 20:57, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Heavy markup cleanup
[edit]I've been working on this infobox for the last few hours to get rid of the tables and make the markup easier to maintain and less fragile. I shouldn't have broken anything by now, but so much was changed that there may be bugs. Please point out any issues that you find. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:16, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- I don't know what you did, but the infobox on my user page is now too wide. I tried using the "image_width" parameter to see if it was my photo that was doing it with the new markup, but no dice on fixing the width of the box... —Elipongo (Talk contribs) 20:59, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- I've made a fix to your userpage, hope you don't mind. You had forgotten the Userboxtop and Userboxbottom templates; you can see where I added them. I've not gone over the changes made to this template line by line, but it appears to be okay. Usually, the problem lies within the userboxes themselves, since each one is rarely code-perfect and sometimes don't use the standardised UBX template code. In any case, the fix isn't perfect (a bit too heavy on the left side), but it works. — Huntster (t • @ • c) 21:23, 9 February 2008 (UTC)
- I don't mind at all, thanks for the fix!—Elipongo (Talk contribs) 01:03, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
A bigger and better user infobox
[edit]When I first found this infobox, I thought I could add to it. Well, I did in my user space. I would like to, at some point, copy the box over to this one. Let me know what you all think before I do it. - LA @ 14:58, 25 February 2008 (UTC)
- Other than the autocollapsing of sections, I don't see that there's a reason we'd have to move the whole thing as opposed to merging in any requested additional parameters. And the autocollapsing of the whole thing by default is overkill. I doubt very many people will have quite as much data in their infoboxen. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:19, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- There are a lot of things in the infobox the I created that are not here with more to come. The infobox might, one day, be able to replace most user templates. - LA @ 15:36, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
