Better format suggested

[edit]

First of all I'm not fond of templates for references and prefer simply writing (typing) them out, between html ref indicators if the fancy strikes. But that's just me. Now for my suggestion.

The example address which appears at the top of the WRMS template page as WRMS species. Accessed through: World Register of Marine Species at http: //www. marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id={{{1}}} is cumbersome and should be simplified so as to appear as Taxon and authority at World Register of Marine Species, date (of access). Example Heterodonta Neumayr, 1884 at World Register of Marine Species [1] 11/16/2012

This would make these references more concise with appearances more professional. Words like "accessed through" are superfluous since it should be obvious that the data came from that particular website. The printed out http: //www. marinespecies.org/aphia.php ... etc serves no purpose and is just clutter. Relevant http://www.etc (urls) are put to use and themselves don't appear directly.

Remember that WoRMS is a taxonomic reference, not the taxonomic reference. Although good, for the most part, like any source, should be used with discretion. J.H.McDonnell (talk) 03:37, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The template follows the citation guideline that WoRMS suggests on the footer of every taxon page. Ganeshk (talk) 16:00, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please replace with the current version of the sandbox (diff) to remove double spaces that result when neither parameter 3 nor parameter 5 are provided. See the testcases ("Plain template", "Example 1", and "Example 2") for the visual difference. Thanks, --DannyS712 (talk) 05:03, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
