The Finest Hours is an upcoming American disaster drama film directed by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Scott Silver, Eric Johnson and Paul Tamasy, based on the 2009 eponymous book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. The film is based on the true story of the Pendleton rescue mission attempt in 1952 by Coast Guard ships, wherein two oil tankers were split asunder by a nor'easter.[1][2] The film is due to be released by Walt Disney Pictures in the Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D formats on January 29, 2016.[3]

Plot

The rescue mission took place in 1952 off the Cape Cod coast after two oil tankers, SS Fort Mercer and SS Pendleton, were destroyed by treacherous winter winds and waves.[1] The crew of motor life boat CG 36500 and the crew of a surfboat from the USCGC Yakutat heroically rescued nearly all the tankers' crewmen.

Walt Disney Pictures and Whitaker Entertainment are producing the film.[12]

On August 12, 2011, Walt Disney Pictures acquired the screen rights to the 2009 novel The Finest Hours.[2] Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson wrote the script based on the book and interviews they conducted with survivors.[2][13] In May 2013, Robert Schwentke was hired to direct the film.[14] However, he left the project to direct The Divergent Series: Insurgent, and was replaced with Craig Gillespie in April 2014.[4] Casting was done from April through October 2014.[4][5][8][9][10][6][11][7]

Filming

Principal photography began on September 8, 2014, in Quincy, Massachusetts.[15] On October 27, the film was being shot at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts.[16] They were also set to film at South Shore and then move to Chatham in December.[16][17] In early December, filming was taken place in the town Marshfield.[18] On December 12, Affleck was spotted playing piano at Symphony Hall in Boston, while they were shooting in Chatham at the time.[19] About the shooting of the film, Affleck wished it to continue, saying, "one of the best".[19]

Release

After originally being set for release April 15, 2016 and then October 9, 2015,[20] the film is set to be released on January 29, 2016.[3] The first trailer for The Finest Hours was released on July 8, 2015.[21]
