Tristen (Born Tristen Gaspadarek, November 23, 1983) is an American Singer-songwriter and musician. She has released four albums: Teardrops and Lollipops (self-released, 2008), Charlatans at the Garden Gate (2011), CAVES (2013), and Sneaker Waves (2017). She also performed as a member of Jenny Lewis's live band in 2015.
After graduating from De Paul University in 2007, where she studied relational group and organizational theories of communication, she moved to Nashville, TN to immerse herself in the burgeoning music scene.
In February 2011 she released her label debut Charlatans At The Garden Gate to critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone magazine praising the record for its "catchy refrains with multiple meanings," and "ear-tugging melodies with hidden hooks."[2] The album was also recognized favorably by NPR,[3] Spin Magazine,[4] The A.V. Club,[5] and Paste Magazine[6] among many others.
C A V E S was released in October 2013. The LP was recorded partly in Nashville by Battletapes engineer, Jeremy Ferguson, part in Omaha with Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, M Ward) and was mixed by synth-pop pioneer Stephen Hague (New Order, Pet Shop Boys).[7] Just like her previous album, C A V E S was also named "Best Local Album of 2013".[8] by the Nashville Scene Critic's Poll and in the "Top 50 Albums of 2013" by American Songwriter.[9] SPIN Magazine claimed that the new sound of C A V E S had recast the songwriter as "a synth pop siren" [10]
Since the release of Charlatans At The Garden Gate Tristen has extensively toured North America with artists including Those Darlins, The Elected, Justin Townes Earle, Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, Vanessa Carlton and more. In March of 2014, Tristen opened for Television (band) in Nashville.
Tristen frequently collaborates with her friend Caitlin Rose and partner, guitarist Buddy Hughen.
In 2015, Tristen was featured in the documentary The Moment: Bonnaroo, about the popular music festival.
In 2016, Tristen released a chap book of poetry, Saturnine.[11]
She released her fourth album Sneaker Waves in 2017, with a worldwide release in 2018.[12]
Television
"Baby Drugs" was featured on the HBO television series Enlightened and the film Better Living Through Chemistry. MTV's reality TV shows Catfish: The TV Show and Teen Mom 2 used the song "Gold Star" and the teen drama Finding Carter used "House of War."[13] "Special Kind of Fear" was featured in Denis Leary's television show Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll.
