Lieutenant (Dr.) Ummer Fayaz Parray (8 June 1994 - 10 May 2017) was an Indian Army officer who was abducted and killed in May 2017 by Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen militants in Jammu and Kashmir, India.[1][2][3][4][5][6] He had been commissioned as a lieutenant in the Indian Army on December 10, 2016 and was serving in the 2nd battalion, Rajputana Rifles.[7]
Early life
Lt Ummer Fayaz was born in Shopian, Kashmir in 1994, and studied in.Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya and National Defence Academy[8]
Abduction and killing
Lt. Ummer Fayaz Parray was abducted from his uncle's house in Shopian district, Jammu and Kashmir on the night of 9 May 2017. At the time of his abduction he was on leave from duty and was also unarmed. He had come to his uncle's house to attend a marriage ceremony in his family. Militants shot him twice, and his dead body was found the next morning.[9][10][11]
Aftermath
He is survived by his father, who is a farmer, his mother and two sisters.[12] He was given a guard of honour and the funeral was attended by 400 people.[13] His murder was extensively criticized on social media.[14][15]
Two of the militants who were responsible for his murder were killed in security operations on 31 March and 1 April 2018.[16]
Legacy
In May 2017, Army Goodwill School, an army school in Kashmir was renamed as Shaheed Lt. Umer Fayaz Goodwill School by Indian Army to honor Lt. Ummer Fayaz.[17][18]
