United States presidential election in Alabama, 1964
In the 1964 United States presidential election , Alabama was the only state in which the Democratic Party nominee, President Lyndon B. Johnson did not appear on the ballot. This was also the third time when a Republican nominee carried Alabama, a state which had voted for the Democratic nominee since Reconstruction .
Despite Johnson's landslide victory that year (he won, to date, the highest percentage of the popular vote – 61.1%), he also lost to Goldwater four other Southern states , earlier solidly Democratic - Louisiana , Mississippi , South Carolina and Georgia .
