Elana Mann is a contemporary artist that creates sculptures, artwork, and various projects through the use of sound and community engagement to address

the importance of listening and the power of the collective voice.

Early Life and Education

Growing up Mann’s heritage was Jewish, and she was raised by her family who was also members of the Reconstructionist Judaism movement. In 2003 she received her B.F.A. from Washington University in St. Louis and in 2007 she earned her M.F.A. at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. During her career, she became a visiting lecturer and mentor for many undergrads, alumni, and faculty.  

Throughout Mann’s lifetime, from 2008 to 2019, she gained her teaching experience through various colleges, universities, and art institutes. For instance, in art institutions, she has mentored students and taught at the Vermont College of Fine Arts, Pitzer College, and the Art Institute of California-Los Angeles, among many others.  

Art Inspiration

Mann's multimodal art examines the potential for rebellion in modern society. In addition to performance, photography, event planning, drawing, video, rioting, publishing, and sculpture, Mann frequently employs an interdisciplinary approach to creating work. Her installations frequently promote audience participation and public performance.

The theatricality of human relationships and the possibilities for exchange are highlighted and explored in Mann's work. She investigates the politicized spaces between individuals and artistic practices whether it being actual, digital, or cultural. Building performances, objects, and videos are some of Mann’s artistic output

Notable Work

Solo and Two Person Exhibitions

• 2021 Year of Wonders, redux, 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, CA: This art exhibition was an exhibition of protest instruments. With the creation of ceramic and fiberglass instruments, Mann's sculptures and audio works documented the thoughts, emotions, and experiences of activism.

• 2020 Sound from the Swamp: This demonstration was a solo exhibition with sonic performances and sculptures to display the suppression of our national government.

• 2018 Instruments of accountability, Pitzer College Art Galleries, Claremont, CA: In this exhibition, Mann’s explores the connection between early listening devices—like those created by Kircher and contemporary protest movements in her new show to highlight the public's discontent.

• 2016 The Assonant Armory, Commonwealth & Council, Los Angeles, CA: This display represents a sculptured vocal instruments made from musical horns and megaphones in support of social justice campaigns.

Public Projects/Commissions

• 2022 Shake, rattle, roll Los Angeles City Hall, May 14, 2022: This demonstration was a protest for women's reproductive rights during the Women's March Foundation.

• 2021 One day I will make a mace, but for now I have a mouth, Art Journal Open: This art piece is an artistic project that signifies a series of pragmatic protest rattles to amplify Mann’s voice in marches and demonstrations.

• 2019 Dark Victory, LACI AIR + CicLAvia, Los Angeles, CA: This public project was an interactive, eco-friendly eco art that allowed participants to create custom prints.

• 2017 Take a Stand Marching Band, Los Angeles, CA: Take a Stand Marching Band was a street performance held during the Women March to resist against injustices within our communities.

• 2016 Talk Through The Hand: This demonstration was a temporary mural of an instrument that was created by Mann’s to exemplify the political attempts to censor public expression and the human voice.

• 2014 Grand Rounds Los Angeles: The Grand Rounds was a public project that united public administers during their lunch breaks to discuss recent advancements in methodology, tactics, and techniques for effective regional government administration.
