From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Girlfriend Reviews is a YouTube web series created by an American couple by the names of Shelby and Matt.[1] Matt writes and edits each episode, while Shelby provides narration and additional writing input. [1][2] The show features Shelby as the titular girlfriend character, as she comedically shares her experiences with living with a boyfriend who is an avid gamer. The first episode of the show was published on YouTube on November 19, 2018, and featured the video game Red Dead Redemption 2, developed by Rockstar[3]. The series has been received positively online, with the channel having amassed over 1.2 subscribers as of April 2021[4]; and the show receiving a nomination at the 2019 Streamy Awards[5][6][7]. The couple have frequently collaborated with other internet personalities.

Show Format

[edit]

The series has a similar format to video essays and video game reviews. Episodes center around a newly released video game that has become the latest obsession for the boyfriend character. Instead of simply reviewing the game itself, the show focuses on the girlfriend’s perspective as a spectator. The series aims to blend comedy with genuine critique and commentary on the quality the video game itself. Episodes are typically 5-15 minutes long, and are usually released on a biweekly basis. Some episodes include a satirical musical performance by Shelby, who has been professionally trained as a vocalist.[2]

The show has been praised for its unique and satirical approach to video game coverage, with gaming outlet USgamer, a subsidiary of Eurogamer, praising the show for its "sharp sense of humor" and "punchy editing".[1] Gaming outlet Kotaku applauded the show for offering a "refreshing new perspective", in an article commenting on the show's coverage of the Naughty Dog developed video game The Last of Us Part II[8].

Show History

The idea for the show was conceived by Matt during a period of unemployment, where Shelby would often comedically chastise him for spending nearly all of his free time playing Red Dead Redemption 2.[2] Matt formerly worked as professional video editor, and decided to combine his editing skills with his girlfriend's sense of humor and comedic commentary to create the show.[2] The first episode was titled "Should your Boyfriend Play Red Dead Redemption 2?" and was released on November 19, 2018[3]. The video became a viral hit, with much of the video's early traffic being driven by users sharing the episode on social media platforms like Reddit and Twitter[1][2]. As of April 2021, the video has received over 2.3 million views[3]: with Matt and Shelby having gone on to produce over 60 more episodes[4].
