Leslie Reid (artist)[edit]
Leslie Reid is a visual artist living in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada (as of 2018). She was born in Ottawa in 1947.
Reid graduated from Queen’s University with a B.A. degree in Art History and Political Science in 1968, followed by a move to England where she studied drawing, painting and printing at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London, England. She studied printmaking at the Chelsea School of Art and in a postgraduate course at the Slade School of Fine Art, University of London.
She exhibited in the landmark exhibition Some Canadian Women Artists held at the National Gallery of Canada in celebration of the first International Women’s Year (1976), and she also represented Canada at the Paris Biennale (1977).
Major solo exhibitions have been held at Canada House Gallery, London, the Centre culturel canadien, Paris, the Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, and the Robert Mclaughlin Gallery, Oshawa. A survey of 15 years of work, curated by Anna Babinska at the Ottawa Art Gallery, toured in California and Georgia. A retrospective exhibition, curated by Diana Nemiroff, at the Carleton University Art Gallery in the fall of 2011, featured works from 1975 to the present.
Leslie Reid has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Ontario Arts Council, and the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts, of which she has been a member since 1978. She was artist-in-residence at the École nationale de la photographie in France, at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and through the Cape Pine Foundation in Newfoundland. Recently she participated in the Canadian Forces Artists Program, travelling with military throughout Northern Canada and the High Arctic. Her work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée d’art contemporain, Montréal, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Glenbow Museum, amongst others.
Leslie Reid is Professor Emerita in the Department of Visual Arts, University of Ottawa.
Leslie Reid’s paintings, serigraphs, lithographs, etchings and drawings of landscapes and people she is close to, show her interest in light and the emotional experience of setting.
While luminance is central in Reid’s work, she employed various approaches to its depiction. Calumet Island shows Reid’s expansion beyond the canvas in her depiction of the sky’s light at different times of day. Point Lobos I exemplifies her single-hue approach to landscape, using a narrow band of values to provide an ethereal effect. Her paintings in 1990 employed a technique of layering a wax and oil medium on a background to create an image with darkness, as seen in Denny Wood V.
Reid was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1977 and she won the RCA jury prize for excellence in Visual Arts in 2000. Reid taught painting and drawing at the University of Ottawa from 1972 until 2007.
Awarded the Canada C3 expedition Visual Artist residency for travel across the top of Canada in the High Arctic in August 2017, Reid joined the icebreaker Polar Prince at Pond Inlet on northern Baffin Island, and travelled through the Northwest Passage visiting sites and communities including Beechey Island, Resolute Bay and Gjoa Haven, until disembarking in Cambridge Bay. The trip was an opportunity to continue her exploration of the Arctic and the effects of climate change on peoples and places in the North.
