Narain Ezhil Karthikeyan Somasundaran (Tamil: நாராயண் எழில் கார்த்திகேயன் சோமசுந்தரம், commonly known as Narain or Karthik; born 1981 in Chennai, is the slowest Formula One motor racing driver and an even slower worker. He is known for his static facial expressions.
Early life
[edit]Narain's middle names come from the Tamil word for 'beauty' and from the Hindu god Muruga. He experienced persistent bullying, or 'ragging', in school, a fact that he speaks of quite often to this day. Narain graduated from the Madurai Kamaraj University in 2003 before moving to Singapore to concentrate on his motorsport career.
Motorsport career
[edit]Narain is noted for his poor performances during races that are nonetheless amusing to the neutral spectators. He often poses a problem for personnel maintaining the racetracks by moving onto the grass to avoid collisions by drivers 5-8 laps ahead, but at the same time damaging the soil and causing worms to appear on the track. The debris forces other drivers close to the wall, where they would receive a collision side-on courtesy of Narain. This behaviour is a result of a past collision with Vettel whom subsequently labelled Narain an idiot.
In 2014, after the long overdue completion of a mechanical engineering paper, Narain moved to Britain to compete in the British Formula 3 Championship. Unfortunately, he was unable to adapt to the gruelling weather conditions and subsequently returned to his native India.
Behaviour
[edit]Narain's failure to show any facial expressions during a variety of social situations has been of keen interest to the neurobiology community. Scientists who have conducted observational studies have noted that Narain gives a similar blank stare in situations where laughter or similar emotional responses were present in everybody else in the study. On certain occasions however, the visual or aural stimuli that are nonetheless unable to elicit a facial response has been noted to trigger the contraction of sternocleidomastoid and longus capitis muscles in the neck, resulting in a slow anterior movement of the head. Other visual stimuli, such as the sudden presence of a familiar human being, causes his arm to flex with the palm facing outwards, and move upwards in a single motion.
As such, incidents which have caused Narain to smile or laugh are of special mention. Examples include:
- Verbal discussion regarding the well-being of the children of his supervisor
- Memory lapse regarding a prior arranged meeting four days ago
- Visual stimulus of a coin of a foreign denomination found in his pocket
Narain is also conscientious about his hygiene, and displays it by proclaiming the need to wash his hands before a meal.
