Nurses is a Canadian television medical drama series, that premiered on January 6, 2020 on Global Television [1]. The series follows a group of nurses at a busy downtown hospital.[1]

The series creator and writer of episode one, Adam Pettle, is a Canadian playwright, radio producer and television writer, who created the show with the goal of bringing a new element to the genre of medical dramas.[2] Pettle wanted the main focus of the show on the viewpoint of nurses, “who are usually relegated to background performers in hospital shows.”[2] Pettle stated that the first episode along with the rest of the first season is meant to depict familiar, realistic events, such as the Toronto van attack of 2018, to highlight the ethical struggles frontline health workers can face on the job, as well as showcase their heroism.[2]

Premise[edit]

This fictional series is a character driven drama following five young working nurses who are fresh out of school,[3] working on the frontline of a busy downtown Toronto hospital and dedicating their lives to helping others, while struggling to help themselves.[1] Lisa Godfrey, Vice President of Original Content at Corus Entertainment, describes the show as a “high-stakes medical drama with a character-driven plot that humanizes the lives of the heroes on the frontlines of medicine."[4]

Production[edit]

Development[edit]

In September 2018, Global TV announced the launch of a new primetime medical drama, Nurses.[4] The series executive producer, Ilana Frank, helped develop the idea for the show after reading a novel by Toronto General Hospital ICU nurse Tilda Shalof, The Making of a Nurse (2007).[19]

Filming[edit]

Production of the pilot episode began on April 4, 2019. Filming took place in the Greater Toronto Area, in the cities of Mississauga and Hamilton.[20]

Production[edit]

Nurses is produced by ICF Films in association with Entertainment One and Corus Entertainment.[4] The Canada Media Fund, an organization that “delivers financial support to the Canadian television and digital media industries”,[21] and the Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, which “provides eligible productions with a fully refundable tax credit” [22] are also regarded as partners on the series.[4]

Release[edit]

Broadcast[edit]

Nurses began airing on January 6, 2020 on Global TV in Canada.[1] Global TV also released an exclusive online preview on January 1, 2020 on their website GlobalTV.com.[1] The show aired Monday nights for ten weeks [23] and completed its first season on March 9, 2020.[1]

Marketing[edit]

To bring awareness and promote the series premiere, Global Television launched a “Thank A Nurse” initiative.[1] This encouraged Canadian’s to nominate registered nurses that had made a positive impact on their life for a chance to win an appearance on The Morning Show.[1] The campaign ended just before the series premiere on January 1, 2020.

Streaming[edit]

Nurses is now available to stream on GlobalTV.com, the Global TV app, Apple TV, Android TV, Google Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV and Roku.[1]

Reception[edit]

Before the first season’s premiere Nurses received an early renewal for its second season.[24] Described as an “instant hit with Canadian audiences”,[25] the premiere amassed nearly 1.3 million viewers and became the “most-watched premiere episode of a scripted Canadian series in over two years for total viewers.”[25]

Nurses has received a range of mixed reviews from audiences and critics.[26][27][28][29] It currently has a 50% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes [27] and a 5.2/10 rating on IMDb.[26] John Doyle of The Globe and Mail describes the show as “borrowed and hackneyed” and argues that the characters do not provide an accurate representation of nurses and medical terminology, calling the show “about as realistic as an animated Disney version of a medical drama about nursing.” [28] Another reviewer notes, “the pilot has its moments, and the young cast members are all appealing and well chosen,” calling Nurses “another pleasantly bland Canadian drama.” [29]
