Mayaguez[edit]

Hi! Very nice work on the Mayaguez article. I'm just here to make a suggestion on adding info in that article on the rail system which existed in Mayaguez in the late 19th century. See the Transportation in Puerto Rico article under the Rail Systems: Defunct Systems section. I was surprised to find that one of the earliest rail travel in Puerto Rico was along the Mendez Vigo avenue in Mayaguez. We definately need the research to find out the origins and details. I was hoping you could help me out. I found the information on the web years ago as part of a research project for a university class, and posted it in article a few weeks ago. Not only was the "tranvía de sangre" the first one in the island (the one that Mon Rivera refers to in his song "Tinguilikitín)), so was the first city wide water treatment plant. Now, electricity, that's another matter... :-S I know where to get the details, but it will be a while before I put my hands in those references... :-( Demf 16:58, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

List of Puerto Ricans[edit]

One of the main concerns about the "list" is that it is getting out of control and that many names of people who have only had their "15 minutes of fame" or simply are non-notables are being added. I propose that we set up guidelines as to who should be admitted with a clear definition as to the terms "notable" and "fame". I am calling upon the parties interested to express their opinion and to help develope these guidelines. I believe that after we take a vote and reach a censensus, said guidelines should be followed and posted either on the article or the articles talk page. We need your help. Endowok and Henry[edit]

David, the USS Endowok and Henry are certainly no Continental Navy frigates, or even lesser vessels. The 13 frigates as well as all other commissioned Continental Navy ships can be found at http://www.history.navy.mil/wars/revwar/contships.htm . From experience, I would say it is far, far more likely that the Endowok and Henry were American privateers, and not Continental Navy vessels. Doing a simple google search for the Endowok returns no results. The index to William Fowler's exhaustive work, Rebels Under Sail likewise provides no mention of the Endowok or the Henry. Based upon this, I would say that the duo are privateers, and thus don't have the "USS" prefix to their name. Where did you learn of the incident? Taking into all of the stories I've heard of the Royal Navy's views on neutrality, the story doesn't seem wholly normal. The Royal Navy always disregarded the neutrality of neutral ports and attacked anyway. Seeing as HMS Glasgow had a successful battle record against Esek Hopkins' fleet the previous year, it seems more likely her commander would have attacked, especially knowing that switching the flags was an obvious trick. Did the source(s) provide an armament for the American ships? I'm interested in knowing more about this, as I've never heard of it, and none of my sources mention it, either. Good question. I'm using as a reference the book about the history of Mayagüez that I quoted on the article. Regino Cabassa was the city historian once, and Martín Gaudier was a history freak, but neither of them were military experts. They definitely had to get the details somewhere, but these details are only as good as the person that transcribed them. Maybe the local Spanish authorities "elevated" the rank or importance of the vessels (perhaps because they didn't know better), or perhaps, since Mayagüez tended to run a bit independently from the main government in San Juan (and since many people profited from contraband in town back then), they made the privateers look as "official" as to not be reprimanded later. One thing is certain: the Glasgow existed back then and didn't attack port. Don't ask me why...

The current city historian is Silvia Aguiló, and she'd know better, since she has at least an M.A. in history. Its eons since I last talked to her brother, a former classmate of mine, and she doesn't know me personally (perhaps only by reference). I'll try to get a hold of her... I have never heard this story you describe. I can tell you a couple of things.

Glasgow was a British frigate durung rthe Rev. Her most famous encounter took place in April 1776 when she engaged in battle with an American squadron in Long Island Sound.

There is no record of vessels named Endowok and Henry ever serving in the Continental Navy.

Comments on your edits[edit]

Hi, just wanted to point out some things to help your editing on Wikipedia and other people's reviews of your edits. Can you make less small edits by using the preview button? It is easier to review your edits for spelling and prose this way. Also can you provide references when adding substantial amount of info? Hey, dude, I am PARANOID about saves(!) Twenty-three years using computers have given me the right to be as paranoid about losing edits as I am, more so given the current status of the Wiki servers (if the Save button in the edit form had a keyboard shortcut, it would be ten times worse!). Sorry on that one, but your request is denied ;-) (Nah, I'll try to get used to the preview... gasp!). OTOH, I tend to write first, document references second, since to me it is better that way... better to take out than to add, since it is quicker. Barbosa's life was very, very interesting, and as such, his bio would be longer, even if it merely enumerated the major events in his life. Just to give you an idea, Barbosa reportedly took a dinghy and rowed from Cataño to San Juan to offer his services to both sides when Admiral Sampson bombarded San Juan in May 1898. I can picture that in my mind right now... Just the story behind his political beliefs as time passed, before and after the 1898 invasion, would make for an excellent article. As far as Wiki articles go, yours is a good one, and I'm glad that Fortuño quoted you... but there's still a lot to be told about the guy. Quite particular was the fact that everybody knows that Barbosa was the primary leader of the pro-statehood movement in Puerto Rico... yet there isn't a single blurb of his writings quoted anywhere in the Web (and I've looked extensively for those... and I'm no statehooder myself!) I could develop it a bit further (but not for a while, work is killing me right now!). BTW, I'm doing a volunteer email campaign within the U. of Puerto Rico to recruit people with some academic background to help us expand everything and anything related to Puerto Rico. I read what you wrote about me in Claridad and I feel very humble. Thank you for honoring me.

I want to share this with you. When I was young, we were told that we had no heroes. In the Anerican histroy books you never find anything about the contributions of the Hispanics nor the Afro-American to the United States. Puerto Ricans have always been stereotyped as people who only use drugs and live off welfare. Puerto Ricans only received negative press.

I made it my goal to do something about that with Wikipedia. I want to educate people, especially our youth in regard to the contributions which our people have made and that we do have heroes to look up to.

I want the world to know that our wonderful island is a nation rich in history and culture. That is my goal.

I'm going to create a "Reference" section in the article. What you have to do is add the verifiable sources at the end of the paragraphs. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached.
