Evenodd (stylized as EVENODD) is a progressive rock band from New Delhi, India. It started out as the brainchild of founder, Debojit Kaushik along with his friend and co-founder Karan Chowdhary. Soon after Prabhtoj Singh filled in as the third member taking up vocal duties in the band. They started out playing in the music scene in New Delhi around 2014 but were mostly dormant while focusing more on writing music and less on performing live. They came out with their debut album named 'Sapiens' in January 2018.

History[edit]

The band started out as Debojit Kaushik's bedroom project along with Karan Chowdhary. They formed a lineup with Prabhtoj Singh, Sanjay Raman, and Yugank Mishra, as the vocalist, drummer and the bassist respectively. Soon they started writing songs which delved more into hard rock and metal drawing influences from bands like Karnivool, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson, Deftones, Incubus, Alter Bridge, Creed and so on although each member of the band have different influences. Unfortunately, soon after the initial songs were written, Sanjay Raman left the band and Prabhtoj Singh went on a brief hiatus focussing on his solo music career towards the end of 2014. Debojit and Karan continued writing songs and gravitated towards writing more intricate song structures. In 2015, Prabhtoj Singh rejoined the band as the Vocalist and wrote the vocals on the instrumental versions of the songs. After writing the bass guitar parts, Yugank Mishra parted ways with the band amicably, due to personal reasons. The band struggled with a lot of commitment issues which cost them a long time in production, also the alignment of their personal schedules delayed things further. They finally entered the studio for production of their recorded material with Keshav Dhar form Skyharbor at Illusion Audio Studio in early 2017. Their debut release is named "Sapiens". The drums were eventually taken up by Karan Chowdhary for the album and Debojit Kaushik focussed more on the songwriting, both of them filling in for the missing parts.

Sapiens (2018)[edit]

The album is a culmination of all of the bands early influences, ranging from hard metal riffs to soft and mellow parts. The songs underwent multiple iterations, the addition of layers resulting in a completely different sound than what the band expected. This was further pushed ahead when Akshat Taneja (ex-Guillotine), wrote the keyboard parts on the record. The evolution of the album was a journey which shaped the sound of EVENODD as they grew as songwriters themselves while collaborating with other musicians in the local scene. The songs on the album are aimed to touch different music styles and moods. This gave leeway to writing longer songs and ambient progressions. The album is a concept album with each of the songs having a theme of its own. The lyrics are written by Kunal Chowdhary and were written with the motive of a story. The album is a culmination of human emotions and psyche which led to its name.

Musical Style[edit]

EVENODD gravitates towards a style which encompasses genres outside of their own and brings influences from all of them interpreting them in the bands' perception of these styles. You can find elements of genres ranging from western classical music, glam rock, IDM, to core progressive rock riffs. This is a result of the different styles and roles of the members. They have a predilection towards string sections which can be seen in their songs as an influence from bands such as Blackfield, as well as hard-hitting riffs which are inspired by bands such as Karnivool. Their work is heavily layered with guitar parts playing with a backdrop of strings or analog effects. They tend to stay away from harsh sounding vocals or parts and are convinced their sound lies more towards the unchartered areas where multiple genres meet and coalesce into something musically acceptable and enjoyable.

Current Work[edit]

Their second album will entail some darker shades of melodies and a difference in the tonality of their songwriting. They are currently working on the next bout of songs and plan on releasing singles sometime in late 2018 - early 2019. Because they don't have a set line-up all of the arrangements are done by Debojit & Karan and the drum parts are composed by Karan Chowdhary. In addition to this Akshat Taneja is responsible to bringing the synth parts and electronics progressions to life.
