DistroKid is a music distributor that allows artists and musicians to publish music over the internet, whether it is a streaming service or video platform. Many artists in the music industry have major record labels supporting them and distributing their music to the public. However, in May 2013, a platform was created to give artists an easier way to distribute their music to the public. Streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, TIDAL, and many more streaming services are platform that artist can use to upload their music and will be given 100% of their royalties. Artists who upload it through video platforms like YouTube will get 80% of the royalties, while DistroKid gets 20%. According to TuneCore's founder, Jeff Price, “As the founder of TuneCore, I hate to say it but DistroKid is the single best music distribution company in the world. Light years ahead of CD Baby and TuneCore and far less expensive.”

History

In 2013, DistroKid was founded by Philip Kaplan. Kaplan had part taken a social music network at the time, which was a side feature called Fandalism at this time. Following this in July 2015, artists and musicians, Jack & Jack, the first time a DistroKid artist went number one on the iTunes chart. This was a monumental step with the artist having the capability of earning 100% of their earnings due to having their royalties, as DistroKid does not part with taking them away from the artist.Spotify announced in late 2018 that it would obtain a tiny portion of its stake in DistroKid. In recent years, DistroKid has allowed record labels to data-mine to find a new artist for their record label. In 2021, this feature was added, and the first label to take advantage of it was Republic Records.

Pros and cons

A pro for DistroKid is that it is faster to upload music for artists that have no label. Compared to its competitors, it gets uploaded 10–20 times faster than the other services for music. A pro that DistroKid has is that it gives its artists the capability to upload unlimited music to streaming services for a low price. Another pro that DistroKid has is the ability for an artist to create their release date and give them options for pre-orders. One negative aspect of DistroKid is that the music distribution company only really offers the distribution part. Artists on their own have to promote their music like a record label would if an artist was signed. But artists, being usually independent when under DistroKid, don’t have the power that a record label would have to push out the music. Another con is that artists who use DistroKid must use their “Musician Plus” or “Label” plan to release music whenever they want. The regular plan for $19.99 a year does not give artists the capability to drop music whenever they want. This gives the artist and user using DistroKid a disadvantage since distributing it will be a lot harder without a specific date in mind. The company also has no bundling options that could generate them and their artist more money.

Prices and services

DistroKid has seven plans for an artist to choose from. The highest being 1,349.99 a year as of late 2023, and the lowest being 22.99 a year as of late 2023. Distrokid has extra addons; the price of purchasing the services ranges from $0.99 to $26.99. This gives artists services like DistroVid and Mixea. DistroKid has also moved forward throughout the years and given artists some other accommodation. DistroVid, Vizy, Social Phone, and Mixea are all 100% optional for artists, with an extra cost from the core spending that artists do to upload their music. A long time ago, DistroKid did have a free trial mode for users, but they have grown to not give one anymore, so the best way to purchase services, artists, and musicians is to find coupons before purchasing. • Vizy is a music service under DistroKid that produces music visualizers.

• Mixea is a music service under DistroKid that produces AI mastering for tracks.

• Social Phone is a music service under DistroKid that allows you to text fans and send text message notifications to them

• DistroVid is a music service under DistroKid that allows musicians to distribute unlimited music videos to platforms like Apple Music, Tidal, and Vevo.
