Delta Pi (ΔΠ) is the oldest founded fraternity at the University of Ottawa [1] dating back to the fall of 1989. In 1990, the Fraternity became the Delta Pi chapter as part of the international Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity. However, in 2006 after having their charter revoked by the National office, the Delta Pi chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity [2] evolved into the newly local fraternity known today as Delta Pi Fraternity. It remains one of the most popular local fraternity on campus. Over 250 undergraduate students have been initiated throughout the years and will forever remain brothers and alumni of the organization.

The brothers of Delta Pi Fraternity, also referred to as Sammies, strive to remain true to their motto: "Building Better Men" both in themselves and in others. Their symbolic colors are purple and white and their flower is the purple aster [3].

History

[edit]

Founding

[edit]

In the fall of 1989, the student leaders of each faculty were invited to discuss the creation of the University of Ottawa's first [Fraternities_and_sororities|fraternity]]. Of the students invited, twelve arrived - John Hall, John Jenicks, John Kuchmeister, Matthew D. Stone, Simon Gencher, Shannon Smith, Guy Mizrachi, Ethan Goldberg, Thomas Baars, Charles Gavsie, Andy Jenicek, and Blair Carey. At a school where Greek-life [4] had been unheard of, these twelve men built the foundation of of the Fraternity and the Greek community.

Sigma Alpha Mu Affiliation

[edit]

In 1990, the leaders of the Fraternity were contacted by Sigma Alpha Mu on the topic of internationalization. Intrigued by the idea of an international brotherhood, Blair Carey, with the support of his executives, spear-headed the initiative to make our organization part of the international fraternity Sigma Alpha Mu. On January 31, 1991, Sigma Alpha Mu had accepted the proposal, and the organization became the Delta Pi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Mu.[5] The University of Ottawa chapter became 1 of 4 (now disaffiliated) of the Fraternity's canadian chapters.

Sigma Alpha Mu Disaffiliation

[edit]

Due to problems regarding the American's insurance provider failing to comply with Canadian Laws in 2005, the fraternity's charter was revoked leaving the chapter no choice but to disaffiliate from Sigma Alpha Mu.[6] With the dedication of it's members however, the actives of the Delta Pi Chapter moved forward and turned their organization into its own independent local fraternity.
