Gé Pellini is a French sculptor born in Nancy in 1966, recognized for his minimalist sculptures of horned animals, particularly bulls and rhinoceroses.

Biography[edit]

From an early age, Gé Pellini was fascinated by sculpture. He begins his introduction to art by learning drawing and sculpture techniques on his own[1].

He follows studies in cabinetmaking and wood carving and continued to perfect his skills in various workshops.

He abandons woodworking, which he finds too industrialized, for a job as a  graphic designer, while continuing to sculpt.

From 1995, he devoted himself entirely to direct-carving marble sculpture[2].

Today, his works are represented in private and public collections around the world[3].

Work[edit]

Gé Pellini's art is characterized by sculptures with simplified forms and carefully studied lines, offering an archetypal vision of the subjects he carves[4].

Inspired by nature, Gé Pellini shows a predilection for horned animals such as rhinoceroses and bulls[5].

However, he also works on other themes such as the falcon, the toucan, the hippopotamuse[6], the ibex or even the kiss[7].

Gé Pellini aims to capture the very essence of his subjects, going beyond their physical aspect[8].

This approach is made possible by in-depth study and meticulous technical execution, allowing him to eliminate any detail he considers superfluous, while amplifying specific attributes[9].

Gé Pellini considers technique as a means to artistic expression[10], arguing that "technique must fade away in favour of artistry" and that "to be simple, you have to be right »[11].

Paradoxically, despite being close to abstraction[12], his works remain fundamentally figurative[13].

Gé Pellini prefers marble[14] and bronze for his sculptures[15]. He explains : "These noble and robust materials reflect the nature of the animals I represent ».

With the aim of perfecting every stroke, he gives great importance to surface work, in particular polishing and his distinctive use of hammering[16].

Through these textures, he seeks to instill a sense of vitality and convey the inherent power of his subjects.

In addition to his medium-sized works, a lot of his creations are in monumental form, demonstrating his ability to play with scale without compromising the integrity of his artistic approach. For example, he was commissioned by the city of Nancy[17] to create a 3-metre-long, 900kg bull in red powder-coated bronze[18]. The work, entitled "Le Taureau de Nancy"[19], is installed on the forecourt of the Palais des Congrès (Centre Prouvé)[20] on Place de la République in Nancy[21].

Gé Pellini's minimalist approach celebrates the beauty and power of animals, while inviting us to think about our relationship with nature[22].

Gé Pellini is committed to environmental causes, and in 2017 took part in a project in Namibia to protect rhinos[23]. In Windhoek, he carves a 3.5-meter-high rhinoceros with an aluminum horn[24], from a 9-ton block of marble[25].

Profits from the sale of this work were donated in their entirety to anti-poaching initiatives[26].

Collaborations[edit]

Gé Pellini is involved in several artistic collaborations[27],[28]. In 2022, he collaborated with Daum for the creation of a limited-edition sculpture entitled "Rhinocéros Ongava". The crystal piece measures 35 cm in length[29]. It is available in two colors: blue and amber.

In 2023, he created a work to be used as a model for the general foundry competition[30]. At the prize-giving ceremony at the Sorbonne, attended by Gé Pellini[31], a copy was presented to the then Minister of National Education and Youth, Pape Ndiaye[32].
