Heldmaschine originated from the 2008 Rammstein cover band Völkerball (German for dodgeball).[1] The name Völkerball is derived from the album of the same name released by Rammstein in 2005. Similarly to Rammstein, Völkerball often makes use of pyrotechnics during their performances. In addition, many of the costumes and stage plays of Rammstein are emulated by Völkerball.

In 2011, the band released their first original album, titled Weichen & Zunder. The album consisted of twelve tracks, of which eleven were original compositions. The remaining track, La Paloma, is a cover of Hans Albers' song of the same name. After the band split, Heldmaschine republished the album. In April 2012, the music video for Radioaktiv was released.[2] Following the success of the music video for Radioaktiv, a music video for Doktor was released in the autumn of 2013.[3]

In addition to regular concerts during their tours, the band also performs at public concerts, which are not part of the actual tour. For example, the band was an important part of Rock in Bad Ems or the Rurseefest at Düren.[4][5] While the primary audience of the band resides in Germany, it has received some reception from outside Germany.
