Jacob Bruce Hertzog (born March 14, 1986 in Champaign, Illinois).[2] also known as Jake is an American jazz guitarist and composer who has performed and collaborated with musicians such as, Mick Goodrick, Michael Wolff, Victor Jones, Harvie Swartz (known as Harvie S), Bucky Pizzarelli, John Bunch, Mickey Roker, Max Weinberg, Zade Dirani, and Nat & Alex Wolff among others. Jacob’s range of musical genres includes jazz fusion, rock, blues, and soul.
Biography[edit]
Jacob attended University Laboratory High School (Urbana, Illinois).[3] also known as “Uni-High” where he participated in the Jazz band. Also during Hertzog’s high school years, Jacob took ensemble classes from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. When Hertzog graduated from Uni-High in 2003, he continued his musical education by attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. At Berklee, Jake studied with well-known guitarists such as Mick Goodrick, Rick Peckham, and Ritchie Hart among others.
In 2006, Jake became the youngest winner of the Montreux Jazz Festival Gibson Guitar competition at 20 years old. He returned the next year opening for John Scofield. Hertzog graduated from the Berklee School of Music in 2007 and continued his career by moving to New York City.
Musical career[edit]
When Jacob was at Berklee he was one of the only guitarists to hold both chairs in the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra directed by Greg Hopkins, and the Rainbow Band directed by Phil Wilson (trombonist). Throughout Hertzog’s career as a guitarist he has played and collaborated with musicians such as, Michael Wolff, Victor Jones, Harvie Swartz (known as Harvie S), Bucky Pizzarelli, John Bunch, Max Weinberg, and Zade Dirani.
In November 2008, Jacob left NYC to tour with musically gifted Nat & Alex Wolff stars of Nickelodeon’s The Naked Brothers Band (TV series). While on tour, Jacob helped as Musical Director and also sang backup vocals. The tour continued in the summer of 2009. Nat and Alex are expected to release a new studio album sometime in 2010.
Jacob has also been featured in Guitar Player.[4] Magazine and currently writes a monthly column entitled “Hey Jazz Guy”.
In 2010, Hertzog released his second studio album entitled “Patterns” featuring Harvie S. on bass and Victor Jones on drums. After finishing this album Jacob went on tour through the Midwestern United States performing at venues such as Indianapolis’s Jazz Kitchen.
