In Statistics Canada's 1996 Census of Population, Canada had a population of 28,846,761, a change of 5.7% from its 1991 population of 27,296,859. With a land area of 9,203,210.49 km2 (3,553,379.44 sq mi), it had a population density of 3.1/km2 (8.1/sq mi) in 1996.[1]

Of the numerous municipalities that existed at the time of the 1996 census, Montreal had the largest population of all municipalities in Canada at 1,016,376, a change of -0.1% from its 1991 population of 1,017,669. Cornwall, ranked as the 100th-largest, had a population of 47,403, a change of 0.6% from its 1991 population of 47,137.

Of the 100 largest municipalities in Canada in 1996, 45 were located within Ontario while 23 were located in Quebec and 18 were located within British Columbia. The remaining 16 were located within Alberta (5), Nova Scotia (3), New Brunswick (2), Saskatchewan (2), Manitoba (1) and Newfoundland and Labrador (1). In terms of municipal status, 58 were cities, 23 were villes, 8 were towns, 6 were district municipalities and 2 were regional municipalities. The remaining 3 included a borough, county municipality and a specialized municipality.
