Foundation

[edit]

The Day was established on January 17, 2017, by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to honor the courage and heroism of the defenders of Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, to promote the strengthening of the patriotic spirit in society, to encourage attention and support for members of volunteer battalions and to support the public initiative. The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted resolution No. 4261 ("On the Establishment of the Ukrainian Volunteer Fighter Day" [2] ) to establish the holiday, and 231 Members of Parliament of Ukraine [3] voted in favor of the relevant resolution.

The resolution recommends to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, involving the public, as well as active participants of volunteer battalions that took part in the Revolution of Dignity (November 2013 - February 2014) to develop and approve a comprehensive plan of measures to celebrate the Ukrainian Volunteer Fighter Day at the state level within a month from the date of signing of the resolution. Chiefly, this resolution provides for annual events to properly honor the feat of Ukrainian volunteer fighters, to carry out thematic actions, events, and discussions, concerning mass civil protests in Ukraine, including the participation of voluntary battalions, which have gone on in November 2013 - February 2014, in educational and cultural institutions, military units, etc. [4]
