The Android Meme new article content ...

The Android Meme is a Canadian alternative rock band based out of Toronto, Ontario, formed by vocalist/lyricist Stefano S. Amelio. After repeated changes since its inception, the band solidified their lineup in 2009. A year previous, the group began work on their debut album at Rainbow Trout Studios in Toronto, under the production of Matthew Von Wagner, most notably of the band Alpha Galates. Wagner has produced a multitude of artists in Canada, including Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, Crystal Castles and Rebel Emergency. After the release of the video for the single 'Sumii', and the subsequent release of their debut album 'Ordo Ab Chao' independently in the fall of 2010, the band signed to Magna Carta Records, America's leading progressive-metal label. Magna Carta re-released Ordo Ab Chao worldwide on June 28th 2011 to much critical acclaim, in Europe especially.

Inception (2005-2007)

The idea of The Android Meme was created in 2005 when vocalist Stefano S. Amelio, a native of the Greater Toronto Area, had what he calls a spiritual epiphany. "From that point on, I no longer viewed the world in terms of black or white", says Amelio. "I took note of the cyclical nature of chaos and order". The band name is a phrase often used by conspiracy theorists to reference man-made social programming. 'Android' represents Amelio's view of the synthetic and preconceived elements that secretly govern our society, and 'meme' relates to a message or idea that spreads like a virus. By 2007, the band had released it's debut self-titled EP, recorded by Rob Sanzo at Signal 2 Noise Studios in Toronto. Soon after, several line-up changes were made, and by 2008, Mathias Devereaux had joined on guitar.

A New Direction (2008-2010)

With the addition of Devereaux on guitar, the music took a change in direction, straying from its mostly-electronic origin as the band ventured more into the hard rock domain. During this time, The Android Meme entered Rainbow Trout Studios in Toronto to begin recording songs that would appear on their debut LP with veteran Canadian sound engineer and producer Matthew Von Wagner. Wagner was the vocalist for Toronto prog-rockers Alpha Galates, and brought years of experience to the table. Wagner soon stepped in to drum as a hired gun, both in the studio and for live shows. In the summer of 2009, bassist Mark Davidson joined, and soon after, Jake Hamilton joined as a full time drummer. The Android Meme then filmed their debut video for single 'Sumii', with Toronto based film company Flatline Pictures. A behind the scenes featurette was released on vimeo soon after. The video premiered to a sold out show at The Velvet Underground in March of 2010, and work on the album soon resumed. After playing regional dates all summer, the band finally released their debut album 'Ordo Ab Chao' independently in the fall of 2010. Around the same time, they were approached by Magna Carta Records, an independent progressive-metal label based in Rochester, NY. This surprised both fans and the band themselves, as the group did not initially view themselves as a progressive metal act. However, their music soon caught the ears of prog fans worldwide.

First Step Toward Global Domination (2011-present)

Magna Carta Records re-released Ordo Ab Chao worldwide on June 28 2011 to much critical acclaim, based on its excellent reviews. The album received its most positive reviews in Europe, especially in France, Germany and Sweden. A handful of songs from the record including 'Sumii', 'Sigma', 'Ordo Ab Chao' and 'Polar Rose' have received radio play in several countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands, and even Latvia. The music of The Android Meme has been quoted in reviews as bearing similarity to groups such as Queensryche, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, I Mother Earth, Tool, A Perfect Circle, Rush, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Nine Inch Nails and even Rammstein. The band has begun writing for their follow-up to Ordo Ab Chao, which boasts the idea of a sequel in a sense to the former. "The end of Ordo Ab Chao represents death", said Amelio in an interview with SoundFM in Kitchener, Ontario. "The next record is going to be a sort of 'rebirth' if you will". The Android Meme is currently in the middle of a regional summer tour, which will wrap up in the early fall when they plan to enter the studio once more.
