Innovations for Learning is a nonprofit organization founded by Seth Weinberger in 1993 to help improve the literacy of children attending under-resourced schools. It is known for its flagship software, TutorMate.[1]
History
[edit]Seth Weinberger started his career at the Mayer Brown law firm.[2] After retiring from Mayer Brown he, decided to establish a Chicago preschool in 1992 after being unable to find a suitable one that he liked. After observing the challenges of teachers attempting to teach reading skills to children, he founded a nonprofit that developed educational software.[3] The first three software games were licensed to an educational publisher that helped Innovations for Learning grow in prominence.[3] He launched Evanston-based Innovations for Learning in 1993. [3] By 2009, he left his law practice in favor of Innovations for Learning. [3]
TutorMate
[edit]TutorMate is a program that allows volunteers around the world, mainly from big corporations, to teach literacy to children over the Internet. TutorMate is targeted towards children of the ages of 6 and 7 struggling to learn reading skills.[4] 10 volunteers are recruited from a corporation or organization, who are each paired with a student.[4] They engage in virtual activities that build fluency, comprehension, phonics and spelling skills.[4] A study of 189 kindergarten and first-grade students enrolled in a school that had 39% proficiency in reading showed that at-risk students who participated in tutoring experienced an increasing in reading scores by 163.5% between 2018-2020.[4]
TeacherMate
[edit]TeacherMate is a handheld device that provides educational software such as basic math games or reading, vocabulary, and spelling exercises.. It was first introduced to children in Chicago public schools in 2008, but it has since been introduced to children in countries around the world such as Mexico, Brazil, and Sri Lanka.[5] TeacherMate became digital software available on iOS devices.[6] In a pilot program in four Washington, D.C. schools, more than 49% of student passed benchmark scores after one year of the introduction of TeacherMate, an increase from 16%.[3]
High Dosage Tutoring
[edit]Innovations for Learning has launched a high dosage tutoring program to assist students who have been falling behind in education due to school closures from the COVID-19 pandemic.[7] They provided specially trained Early Literacy Interventionists who work with students to establish proficiency in phonics, fluency, and comprehension.[8]
Global reach
[edit]Innovations for Learning has provided their services in Canada, United Kingdom, Mexico, South Korea, the Philippines, Rwanda, Uganda, and Sri Lanka. A pilot study of the TeacherMate program tripled the literacy test results of teachers in Rwanda.[9] In 2021, Innovations for Learning received a $200,000 grant to teach literacy to indigenous children in Ontario and British Columbia.[10]
Partnerships
[edit]Innovations for Learning has partnered with various organizations, corporations, and school districts.[11]
